Position Summary

Actuarial program strategist will support and work with the Senior Program Director to lead and coordinate program activities under a joint initiative between Milliman Inc. and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to build the actuarial profession and expertise in developing countries, helping predict and prepare for risks in these uncertain times. The UNDP-Milliman Global Actuarial Initiative, announced as part of the 77th United Nations General Assembly, will seek to enable insurers, pension funds and social security administrations to better manage risks and in turn offer innovative and affordable insurance solutions for all. The MicroInsurance Centre at Milliman (MIC@M) will drive the initiative from Milliman, and the position will reside in the MIC@M.

The Actuarial program strategist will design interventions/projects and provide actuarial inputs on implementation plans and associated strategies. He/she will be involved in conducting thought leadership research on topics related to the actuarial profession, and developing toolkits and training programs to grow the actuarial profession in developing countries. This individual will also be involved in tracking progress of interventions/projects and providing oversight to working groups/subcommittees. He/she will support efforts to assign, direct and coordinate activities of multiple Milliman employees engaged in the initiative on a temporary and/or part-time basis. This individual will be critical in the development of strategy on implementation of interventions and drive success of actuarial interventions/projects and design tools for training and capacity building. Majority of support will be provided virtually, but there will be occasional opportunities to travel.

This programme aims to enhance global sustainable development through the expansion of actuarial profession and expertise in the developing world by:

  • Building actuarial capacity and expertise of local actuarial professionals.
  • Enhancing data availability through regulators and the insurance industry.
  • Supporting countries in adapting with more resilient risk management as part of the climate change impact.
  • Supporting advocacy to governments, insurers, and others in achieving programme goals.
The employment contract duration will align with the project lifespan which is currently expected to be 2 years from current date with a potential to renew for an additional 2 years (i.e. ending 31 July 2027).

Skills and Qualifications Required
  • Minimum of 3 years of working experience in the actuarial profession
  • Associate or Fellow (or equivalent) of one of the actuarial professional bodies
  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s Degree or higher
  • Experience in volunteering with local actuarial society or international actuarial associations
  • Experience managing multiple projects
Skills and Qualifications Preferred
  • Work experience in developing countries is ideal
  • Experience working in an insurance-related environment
  • Experience working research and thought leadership research
  • Degree in a relevant field (economics, international relations, international development, business, project management, or finance)
  • Strong communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a multitude of stakeholders and teams/departments
Location
  • MIC@M team is centered in Appleton, Wisconsin
  • Position will be placed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with the option of hybrid work
  • Flexible to work with different time-zones and willingness to participate in conference calls before or after normal business hours to accommodate business hours in a different country
