The Genset Commissioning Engineer will be responsible for commissioning, testing, and handover of critical diesel generator sets (gensets) for data center facilities. This role ensures that all backup power systems operate reliably under normal and emergency conditions, meeting stringent uptime, redundancy, and safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Plan, coordinate, and execute commissioning activities for diesel generator sets and associated systems in data center environments.
Conduct pre-commissioning inspections, functional checks, and system readiness verification.
Perform genset start-up, synchronization, load testing, and performance verification under normal and emergency operating conditions.
Interface with Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS), switchgear, SCADA, BMS, and UPS systems during testing.
Verify installation and integration of gensets with redundant power systems (N+1 or 2N configurations).
Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and control system issues affecting data center reliability.
Prepare detailed commissioning procedures, test reports, checklists, and as-built documentation.
Coordinate with clients, consultants, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure smooth commissioning and handover.
Support Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) and Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) for critical power systems.
Provide operational training and technical support to client's data center personnel.
Ensure all commissioning activities comply with HSE policies, project specifications, and data center uptime standards (e.g., Tier III / Tier IV).
Requirements & Qualifications
Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Power Engineering.
Minimum
3-5 years
experience in genset commissioning, preferably in data center or critical facilities.
Strong knowledge of diesel generator systems, control panels, and protection relays.
Experience with ATS, synchronization panels, load banks, switchgear, and UPS integration.
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, and P&IDs.
Knowledge of data center standards (TIA-942, Uptime Institute guidelines, IEC, IEEE).
Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Willingness to work on-site with occasional extended hours or emergency testing.
Good communication and coordination skills.
Preferred Skills
Experience with major genset brands (Caterpillar, Cummins, MTU, Perkins).
Familiarity with SCADA and BMS integration in data center facilities.
Commissioning experience in Tier III/Tier IV data centers.
OEM training or certification in genset commissioning.
Working Conditions
Site-based in a data center environment with strict access and operational protocols.
May require night or weekend work during load testing or emergency drills.
