UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is offering a full-time internship with the Community Based Protection Team at UNHCR Malaysia.

Organizational context
The intern will be working with the Community-Based Protection team of UNHCR Malaysia.

The Community-Based Protection Team aims to strengthen community engagement with activities that focus on the following:

  • Strengthening communications with communities to improve dissemination of accurate and relevant information and establishing structured feedback and response mechanisms for the operation.
  • Encouraging meaningful participation of refugee communities in planning, implementation, and monitoring of protection activities, and incorporating their feedback to adapt programming.
  • Establish network of outreach volunteers to improve information dissemination, support access to services and identification of persons with specific needs.
  • Strategic engagement with NGOs, faith-based organizations, community-based organizations, refugee learning centres, local government, private sector, academia, to enhance network of support for protection of refugee communities
  • Build strategic partnerships with relevant stakeholders including members of parliament, state assembly persons, local councillors, and host communities to support the peaceful co-existence initiatives.
The intern will have opportunities to support case management and referrals for refugees in need and work with refugee communities from diverse nationalities and cultures. The attachment will present opportunities to hone competencies in teamwork and collaboration, stakeholder management, planning and organizing, judgement and decision making.

All UNHCR interns are accountable to perform their duties as reflected in their terms of reference. They do so within their delegated authorities, in line with the regulatory framework of UNHCR which includes the UN Charter, UN Staff Regulations and Rules, UNHCR Policies and Administrative Instructions as well as relevant accountability frameworks. In addition, interns are required to discharge their responsibilities in a manner consistent with the core, functional and cross-functional competencies and UNHCR\xe2\x80\x99s core values of professionalism, integrity, and respect for diversity.

The intern will be working in the Community Based Protection team to implement community-based protection activities and comprehensive case management within the sub-team\xe2\x80\x99s assigned areas of responsibility under the direct supervision of the CBP Associate and the overall supervision of the CBP Officer.

The intern will take part in visits with the outreach staff members, to community pockets to conduct community meeting, counseling and if needed protection interview and case management as well as engagement with services providers, NGOs, and CBOs in the particular area. The intern will also participate in outreach work on peaceful co-existence by meaningfully engaging with host communities and local authorities. Applicants should be aware that the role may involve considerable time spent on outreach to refugee communities on the ground or meetings with relevant stakeholders. The intern should possess good communication and interpersonal skills besides strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a team. This role will involve case management with a holistic approach and previous experience in Child Protection / Sexual & Gender Based Violence, health, protection, and education work will be advantageous.

Duties and responsibilities
  • Assist with the referrals from community-based organizations and Child Protection and Gender-Based Violence case referrals
  • Administrative support for events with refugee community
  • Support reporting on community activities and ensure good record keeping.
  • Other duties as required depending on prioritized activities and initiatives
Minimum Qualifications Required
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
  • Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and
  • Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.

Conditions
It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 8.00am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday (37.5 hours per week). The successful candidate will be assigned to support the team in UNHCR Malaysia.

Allowance
Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
