Who we're looking for:

We seek an executive-level technology leader who is

visionary, strategic, and passionate about innovation

- without needing to be hands-on in coding. As a

CTO/Head of Engineering

, you will guide our tech and product strategy, ensuring alignment with business goals and fostering a culture of growth and servant leadership. This is a

hybrid role

combining strategic leadership with hands-on involvement. Approximately 25-30% of the time will be dedicated to implementation and debugging, while the remaining focus will be on system architecture, technical direction, and guiding internal teams.

Work directly with external vendors and partners to align on expectations and drive outcomes--this role does not involve formal vendor management but requires effective collaboration to ensure delivery meets our standards.

Why this role is unique:

We are

transitioning from in-house backend development to a third-party tech provider

to enhance scalability, security, and performance while reducing bugs and maintenance overhead. This is a

strategic shift

that allows us to focus on front-end improvements, marketing experiments, and product innovation. We need a leader excited about this transformation - someone who can refine product strategy, guide teams, and drive innovation rather than push for in-house backend development.

As a CTO/Head of Engineering, you will be responsible for:

Technology & Product Strategy

- Define and execute a long-term technology roadmap aligned with business goals and innovation.

Leadership & Growth

- Inspire, mentor, and empower teams to drive effective execution.

Product Ownership & Execution

- Oversee product evolution, ensuring front-end and API development supports user experience, marketing agility, and growth initiatives.

Security & Scalability

- Ensure site security, performance, and scalability by working with our third-party technology partner while keeping internal processes efficient.

Technical Escalation & Support

- Provide backup for critical issues and guide troubleshooting, ensuring smooth collaboration with third-party providers.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

- Collaborate with marketing, sales, and operations to leverage technology for business impact.

Vendor & Partner Management

- Manage relationships with external tech providers to maximize efficiency, reliability, and innovation.

Must-Have Experience

Leadership experience in a technology or product-focused executive role Experience with Client side web development (HTML/CSS/JS/Smarty/Smarty Twig) Deep understanding of front-end and API-driven development (modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React, AngularJS), CSS frameworks (e.g., Bootstrap, Foundation, UI Kit), component-based architecture, GraphQL) Understanding of AWS, CDN, MariaDB, Apache HTTPd web servers, Linux, Cloud computing, CI/CD, cybersecurity Experience working with Platform as a Service (PaaS) and API-driven environments Hands-on experience using AI tools in software development (e.g., Cursor AI or similar coding assistants) Security and scalability expertise in a digital product environment Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage external technology vendors Experience collaborating with external vendors to drive outcomes without direct management responsibility.

Nice to Have (or willingness to learn)

Cloudflare (maintenance, security, performance optimization) WordPress, PHP, MySQL GTM, on-site data tracking, SEO Experience with automation tools, AI-driven tech, and experimentation platforms (e.g., VWO) UX/UI familiarity (Figma, Adobe XD)

What This Role is NOT

A hands-on backend developer role. A position for someone looking to rebuild everything in-house. A rigid environment - our culture values adaptability, collaboration, and strategic thinking.

Additional Information:

This role is full-time, requiring 35-40 hours per week. It is a fully remote contract position, with Independent Contractors responsible for their taxes and benefits. Each applicant is required to successfully complete a paid Trial Period before transitioning to this role.
