Job Description

The Switchgear Installation & Commissioning Engineer is responsible for supervising, installing, testing, and commissioning LV and MV switchgear systems at project sites. The role ensures that switchgear installation complies with approved drawings, standards, safety regulations, and client requirements, and that systems are commissioned successfully and handed over within project timelines.

Installation Supervision

Supervise installation of

LV & MV switchgear

including MDB, SMDB, MCC, PCC, RMU, AIS, and GIS panels.

Ensure installation is in accordance with approved drawings, manufacturer guidelines, and project specifications.

Coordinate with site teams, subcontractors, and panel manufacturers.

Verify proper cable termination, busbar joints, earthing, alignment, and mechanical integrity.

Testing & Commissioning

Conduct and witness switchgear testing including:

o Insulation Resistance (IR) tests

o Contact resistance tests

o Primary & secondary injection tests

o Protection relay setting and testing

o Functional, interlock, and sequence checks

Support energization and load testing activities.

Troubleshoot and rectify issues during testing and commissioning.

Safety & Compliance

Ensure compliance with

Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST)

, DOSH, IEC, and project safety requirements.

Enforce site safety rules, PTW systems, LOTO, and risk assessments.

Ensure testing activities are carried out safely and documented properly.

Documentation & Handover

Prepare commissioning checklists, test reports, and punch lists.

Assist in preparation of

as-built drawings

, O&M manuals, and handover documents.

Support client inspections and final acceptance.

Coordination & Support

Liaise with clients, consultants, OEMs, and authorities during site works.

Provide technical support during defect liability period (DLP).

Assist project managers in planning installation and commissioning schedules.

Education

Diploma or bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent.

Experience

Minimum

2-5 years

' experience in switchgear installation and commissioning.

Hands-on experience with

LV/MV switchgear

is mandatory.

Experience in data centres, industrial plants, utilities, or commercial projects is an advantage.

Technical Skills

Strong understanding of switchgear systems, protection relays, and power distribution.

Familiar with testing equipment (IR tester, injection test kits, relay test sets).

Ability to read and interpret SLDs, schematics, and wiring diagrams.

Soft Skills

Good communication and coordination skills.

Ability to work independently at site.

Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving ability.

Preferred Qualifications

Registered with

BEM

(Graduate Engineer or above).

Prior experience with

TNB interface or live system commissioning

.

Knowledge of

IEC 61439, IEC 62271

, and Malaysian electrical regulations.
