Job Description

Core Responsibilities

Hazard Identification:

Proactively identify existing and potential hazards in the surroundings or working conditions that are unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous to employees.

Risk Assessment:

Understand the potential risks related to specific activities and assess the level of risk to make sound decisions about necessary control measures.

Corrective Action & Authority:

Crucially, they must have the employer's authorization to take immediate corrective measures, including the power to modify work processes, repair faulty equipment, or stop a job/operation entirely until the hazard is addressed.

Inspections and Monitoring:

Conduct regular, often daily, inspections of the work environment, equipment, and procedures to ensure safety standards are met.

Worker Training and Guidance:

Provide safety instruction and training to other workers on safety protocols and proper use of equipment, leading by example to promote a safety culture.

Compliance:

Ensure the workplace and work activities comply with all relevant health and safety legislation, regulations, and standards (e.g., OSHA standards).
Specific Industry Examples (Construction)The role of a CP is often specialized by the type of hazard or activity, such as:

Fall Protection:

Evaluating worksites for fall risks, overseeing the installation and maintenance of fall protection systems (e.g., guardrails, safety nets), and inspecting personal fall arrest equipment.

Scaffolding:

Inspecting scaffolding components, assembly, stability, and proximity to electrical hazards before and during use, and setting up controlled access zones.

Excavation and Trenching:

Assessing soil conditions, identifying potential cave-in risks, determining appropriate protective systems, and inspecting the site daily and after weather events.

Electrical Safety:

Checking cords and tools for damage and ensuring no exposed wiring or open junction boxes are present to prevent electric shock hazards.

Confined Space Entry:

Testing air quality, establishing safe entry and exit routes, and implementing rescue procedures.
The Competent Person is a vital, on-site role that requires a blend of technical knowledge, practical experience, leadership skills, and decision-making authority to ensure a safe work environment.
