Serve as the go-to technical authority for HVAC systems, providing deep technical oversight, expert troubleshooting, optimization, and continuous improvement. This role supports design, commissioning, operations, and maintenance with a strong emphasis on technical correctness, efficiency, reliability, and adherence to local and international standards. Mentor junior / mid engineers, interface with vendors and clients, and ensure best practices in HVAC technology are deployed across projects.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Design & Review
Review and validate HVAC design proposals, equipment specifications, control sequences, and detailed drawings prepared by internal teams or external consultants.
Ensure HVAC designs meet performance, energy efficiency, and reliability targets.
Conduct or oversee detailed technical studies: load calculations, psychrometric analysis, system sizing, airflow and duct/pipe pressure loss, thermal modelling, etc.
Commissioning, Testing & Optimization
Lead or support commissioning/start-ups of HVAC systems. Ensure that testing, balancing, and performance verification are carried out to spec.
Identify, diagnose, and correct system inefficiencies, performance shortfalls, or reliability issues.
Propose and implement optimization or retrofit measures for energy savings, system improvements, or cost reduction.
Operations, Maintenance & Troubleshooting
Act as a technical escalation point for complex system faults/failures. Perform root cause analysis and corrective action planning.
Develop and maintain preventive/predictive maintenance strategies, SOPs, and technical guidelines.
Support or conduct onsite visits for system checks, preventive maintenance, repair, and ensure high reliability of operation.
Standards, Codes & Compliance
Ensure all HVAC activities comply with applicable codes, regulations, and standards (e.g., Malaysian Standards (MS), Uniform Building By-Laws, relevant ASHRAE standards, SMACNA).
Keep up to date with changes in HVAC technology, refrigerants, energy efficiency regulations, and green building requirements.
Maintain technical documentation (reports, specifications, equipment datasheets) with required compliance certification, vendor guarantees, etc.
Technical Leadership & Knowledge Sharing
Mentor, coach, and upskill internal engineers, technicians, and service contractors.
Serve as technical advisor to project / service teams. Provide training/workshops as needed.
Evaluate vendor/supplier technical proposals; help in selection based on technical merit, lifecycle cost, and reliability.
Stakeholder & Vendor Engagement
Interface with clients, consultants, and regulatory bodies on technical matters. Present technical proposals, clarifications, and performance justification.
Manage relationships with equipment manufacturers/vendors for warranty, technical support, spare parts, and upgrades.
Assist procurement teams in defining technical specifications, reviewing bids from vendors, and ensuring quality and compatibility.
Continuous Improvement & Innovation
Identify opportunities for introducing newer HVAC technologies or materials (e.g., low-GWP refrigerants, energy recovery, smart controls, IoT/BMS integration).
Conduct technical assessments (e.g., CFD / airflow modelling, energy simulations) where relevant to support design or retrofit decisions.
Track performance metrics (energy consumption, system uptime, cost of ownership) and report/act on deviations or improvement potentials.
Qualifications & Skills
Essential:
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent; an advanced degree is a plus.
Substantial hands-on experience (often 8-12+ years) in HVAC systems design, commissioning, maintenance, or operations.
