UNICEF works in some of the world's toughest places, to reach the world's most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.
Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.
And we never give up.
For every child, hope
Together with the Malaysian government and others who are truly passionate about child rights, UNICEF works in Malaysia to ensure every child has the opportunity to grow healthy and happy; live safely; and achieve their full potential.
With the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Sustainable Development Goals, and the 11th Malaysia plan as our guides, we endeavor to change minds, change policies, and in turn change the lives of all children in Malaysia.
Adolescent Development and Participation (ADAP)
In Malaysia, 5.5 million adolescents aged 10-17 make up the country's 32 million population. Whilst Malaysia has experienced rapid economic and social development over the last 20 years, a myriad of social, economic and health factors continue to undermine the ability of adolescents to reach their full potential. Adolescents and young people should have access to opportunities to develop skills for learning, personal empowerment, employability, and active citizenship to enable them as change makers which can contribute to eliminating Malaysian society's greatest challenges.
Engaging adolescents and youth have long been a part of UNICEF's mandate, as participation is a right and one of the guiding pillars of the Convention on the Rights of a Child (CRC). UNICEF Malaysia's Country Programme Document (CPD) 2022 - 26, includes a dedicated output for adolescent development and participation, recognising the importance of second decade programming. The engagement and participation of adolescents and youth is also an important strategy to deliver results across all areas of UNICEF's work. UNICEF's Strategic Plan 2018-2021 highlights "adolescent empowerment" as a key Result Area and "young people and children as change agents" as one of the Change Strategies. In Malaysia, MHPSS is building upon existing ADAP programming and multi-faceted approaches to assist our country to create supportive and healthy environments for children and adolescents. This will enable them to better cope with today's challenges, build resilience and develop the skills they need for better mental health and psychosocial wellbeing.
