The Junior Arborist supports the Arborist and Nature Centre team in assessing, monitoring, and maintaining tree health across the resort property. This role requires basic knowledge of Langkawi's flora and fauna, hands-on fieldwork, and support for conservation initiatives.
The Junior Arborist is expected to practice and promote The Datai's philosophy, service culture, and sustainability commitments to enhance the resort's reputation and guest experience. The role also includes assisting with any operational tasks assigned by higher management to support the Nature Centre.
1. Conduct routine tree health checks across the Destination.
2. Assist the in-house Arborist in detailed data collection for tree assessments, including Resistograph readings, structural measurements, and canopy condition and root zone observations.
3. Support data collections using Resistograph, calipers, GPS devices, and other assessment tools.
4. Identify early signs of decay, structural weakness, pests, or diseases.
5. Assist in managing and updating the Tree Inventory database.
6. Record field observation accurately using provided templates and digital tools.
7. Assist in preparing inspection summaries and reports for Arborist review.
1. Lead and execute tree assessment together with in-house Arborist
2. To interact professionally with guests and members of staff and handle enquiries in a positive and solutions-based outcome.
3. Assist with the upkeep of the Native Tree Nursery and Orchid Nursery
4. Assist with collecting seeds at requested times of the year
5. To constantly be aware of local and global ecological systems and best practices as well as local biological and cultural site histories and practices.
6. To support and actively participate in the 'Datai Trust' sustainability objectives including their CSR initiatives.
1. Maintains highest levels of personal hygiene and grooming at all times, per The Datai Grooming standard.
2. To conduct regular daily inspections to monitor maintenance, cleanliness, health and safety and security of the listed Trails.
3. To be knowledgeable of the contraindications of services and products and act in accordance.
4. To be fully conversant with all health and safety, fire and emergency procedures.
5. To ensure the safety of participants on all guest activities.

2. To take part in training, familiarisation and induction programs and continuously strives to enhance knowledge of the job function.

6. To maintain a high standard of appearance and personal hygiene as laid down by the Director Spa & Wellness and per The Datai Grooming standard.
7. Ensures that channels of communication are respected and information is disseminated to the correct receivers.

Bachelor's (of Science and Arts) Degree in Forestry, Horticulture, Arboriculture, Environmental Science, or related fields.
Two years of field experience in ecology and education and outreach. Excellent knowledge on tree identification is an advantage.

2. Strong interest in conservation and willingness to learn species identification.
3. Physically fit, comfortable working outdoors, and capable of walking long distances.
4. Good observation, documentation skills, and attention to details.
5. A strong natural leadership ability. Comfortable with communicating and training fellow colleagues, interns, and local community partners.
6. A focus on providing customer service excellence in line with The Datai philosophy.
7. Methods and techniques for ecology surveys and resource based recreation.
8. Understanding and execution of natural areas management and conservation projects.
9. A solid knowledge of environmental awareness, education and outreach. Must be passionate about the conservation of natural systems.

Minimum 5 days (45 hours per week). However, additional hours according to business needs are expected.
