Job Description


Purpose of Job To manage the coordination between stakeholders involved in restoration work within the Sabah Landscapes Programme\'s, and to manage and control the operational restoration implementation mainly on the project sites (Tabin-Silabukan, Tawau-Kunak and Lower Sugut Landscapes). The Sabah Landscapes Programme prioritized restoration work (FY21-25) as one of the WWF-Malaysia strategies, and under Objective 6 the programme has planned to implement several forest restoration projects in order to enhance ecosystem connectivity of wildlife corridors at the targets landscape. Under close supervision of the Restoration Lead, Restoration Manager will design strategic restoration model to ensure partnerships with WWF\'s partners, local governments, NGOs, and relevant stakeholders are well managed with good outcomes. The Bonn Challenge, Initiative 20x20, AFR100 and notably, the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (2011-2020) have set ambitious targets on restoration. In the bigger picture, the SLP\'s vision is to create a network of well protected forested areas of a sufficient size and quality to enable the movement of wildlife and long-term survival of Sabah\'s unique flora and fauna. However, designing an ecological restoration model is crucial to adapt to the local environment, and appropriate to maximize restoration outcomes are vital. Major Activities To continuously enhance the image of WWF-Malaysia efforts in conservation by adopting local, technical and scientific knowledge on how to design ecological restoration by use of native tree species and diversity in maximizing landscape heterogeneity. In consultation with Restoration Lead, play a key-role in the preparation of realistic project restoration model design and strategic maintenance minimum for 5-year project tenure. This include preparing the operational budgets that is aligned to project work plan and monitoring of subsequent project budget utilization. To assist the forest restoration needs of the WWF-Malaysia (SLP), which include but are not limited to: (a) Provide input in the preparation & maintain systematic and technical field work procedures including seedling/ saplings preparation and logistic, to ensure efficient implementation/monitoring and work progress reporting including the preparation of area profiling before engaging with ground work; (b) To collaborate with the Procurement and Finance Units for the preparation of the annual reforestation working budget, monitoring of budget utilisation and to ensure the maintainance of a systematic cross-checking of claims for efficient and smooth payments submitted contractors; (c) To monitor status of restored areas in terms of status of growth, seedlings mortality as well as to come up with the cost benefits and how to improve with the contractors and other partners (NGOs, or private sectors); (d) To set and conduct regular meetings with the reforestation partners, restoration consultant and hired contractors on progress and technical matters concerning field operations and other related essential tasks. To align with all activities of other SLP projects and thematic areas, such as to correlate forest restoration activities and species conservation including spatial planning. To assist in the preparation of communication maps for strategic restoration plan, responsible for developing reporting materials on forest restoration matters, including preparing MS PowerPoint presentations and writings on forest restoration-related articles for reporting to SMT and/or BoT, fundraising and/or promotional purposes. To work closely and report to the Restoration Lead. Specifications: A bachelor\'s degree or a post graduate degree in Forestry, Agricultural or environmental science. Strong professional background/scientific knowledge and experience in field operations, with a minimum of 4 years related experience at managerial level/ field operation. Ability to formulate, implement and prepare reports on workable field operations and strategies. Strong leadership quality to lead a small team within the reforestation unit. Excellent management, organisational, and analytic skills. Creative, responsive, and detail-oriented. Excellent writing skills in English and Bahasa Malaysia. High propensity for technical / environmental topics. General understanding of WWF-Malaysia and environmental communication is an advantage. Salary Range RM5,800 - RM6,300 (Commensurate with qualifications and experience)
