About the Role

We are seeking a Lead Tax Operations to join the GBS Tax Operations team in Kuala Lumpur. Reporting to the Manager of GBS Tax Operations within the R2A service delivery line, this role will have direct reports and is responsible for providing efficient, accurate and timely delivery of tax compliance processes as part of the Minerals Americas tax operations team, with a focus on indirect and/or corporate income taxes. The Minerals Americas GBS tax operations team supports the BHP regional tax team in meeting the compliance requirements of BHP entities operating in the US, Canada, Chile, Brazil and other South American jurisdictions. This includes corporate income tax, VAT/Sales & Use taxes, royalties, tax accounting processes, external reporting requirements, as well as tax risk management, audit support, ad hoc requests and process improvement initiatives. As a lead, the focus of this role is to provide customer / stakeholder management, technical review, operational and people management for the Minerals Americas team and support to the Manager as part of the GBS tax operations lead team.

Core Accountabilities

  • Conformance with the BHP Charter, BHP Group Level Documents, Code of Conduct and relevant statutory obligations
  • Review of direct and/or indirect tax returns and tax accounting processes (including account reconciliations, PEC, tax journals, deferred tax balance proofs and tax provisions for corporate income tax) within agreed timelines
  • Review of monthly tax provision calculations and reconciliation as per Group Tax Reporting requirements
  • Review of tax sensitive accounts including liaising with management and financial accountants and the wider business where necessary to resolve queries
  • Participate in risk assessment activities for income tax, SOX and other compliance related areas and ensure compliance with processes, procedures and SOX controls
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of the SAP ERP and Tax technology tools as required
  • Assist in the development, implementation and review of tax policies and procedures across all taxes and ensure compliance with these and GLDs
  • Assist with requests from Tax Reporting and external auditors in connection with taxation and financial accounting audits
  • Maintain integrity of the data in the Tax Issues Management System (TIMS)
  • Provision of tax training, analysis and technical guidance to relevant areas of the GBS tax operations team and across other service delivery lines to improve E2E processes
  • Drive continuous improvement, lead process design improvements and manage change, automation and digitization projects.
  • Build business and commercial acumen through relationships with other functions and areas of the business to ensure proactive engagement of the tax team.

Qualifications
  • Requirements
  • Bachelor\'s degree qualification in accounting or finance
  • Professional qualification (CPA/ACCA/CIMA/CA) or similar tax qualifications, either completed or currently pursuing will be added advantage
  • Preferable
  • Digital skills and prior experience with Power BI, MS PowerTools, Power Automate and use of data analytics to support tax compliance
  • CI, transformation and project management experience in delivering improvements in a GBS environment
Experience & Technical Competencies
  • Experience working within a large corporate or professional environment in finance / tax roles (GBS or in-house functions)
  • Strong operational team leadership, people management and project management experience in a MNC environment
  • Sound technical knowledge of accounting for income taxes (IAS 12) and/or indirect taxes
  • Strong experience in corporate and indirect tax compliance processes and finance ERP systems (with multi-jurisdictional tax compliance / operations experience preferred)
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills

  • Tax technology platforms - Thomson Reuters OneSource applications, Vertex
Languages:
  • Fluent English, both verbal and written.
  • Spanish language skills are an added advantage but not a requirement
