Job Highlights Work life balance Hybrid Work Arrangements Career Growth Purpose of Job The purpose of this job is to carry out field and office project-related work of the Tiger Protection and Monitoring Unit in the Tiger Conservation Programme. Primarily, the job will focus on conducting field surveys for biodiversity monitoring and anti-poaching patrolling in selected areas within the Tiger Conservation Programme landscape which is of importance for tiger conservation and produce reports of the surveys. The key species of interest are tigers and their prey. This position will work closely with the other units within the Tiger Conservation Programme as they complement each other and take place within the same landscape. This position will be based in Gerik, Perak with substantial amounts of time spent in the field. While the incumbent is responsible for specific deliverables related to the Tiger Conservation Programme, he/she will also be guided by and is expected to contribute towards the achievement of WWF-Malaysia Strategy 2021-2030 and Global Programme Framework (or their revised versions) directly or indirectly. Key Outputs
Collect wildlife and poaching data at identified sites and record the data in the standard Survey Data Forms, and compile (key in) all data into the computer database. The data should include tracks and signs identified, locality, habitat, potential threats and other ecological/biological-related data. Evidence of wildlife presence, wildlife signs and poaching signs should be photographed and documented for record purposes.
Prepare documentation on the fieldwork conducted, such as monthly/quarterly updates and technical progress reports with the assistance of the Senior Tiger Protection and Monitoring Officer (if necessary).
Implement the study design, methodology and sampling/patrolling protocols for tiger monitoring work within the Tiger Conservation Programme Landscape according to the most recent scientific advances, in consultation with the Senior Tiger Protection and Monitoring Officer Major Activities 1. Collect data on tigers, their prey and other endangered species in the Tiger Conservation Programme Landscape by conducting camera-trapping and sign surveys. 2. Collect data on poaching, encroachment activity and other potential threats found in the Tiger Conservation Programme Landscape during field surveys / anti-poaching patrols. 3. Lead the field team during surveys/patrolling. 4. Assist Senior Tiger Protection and Monitoring Officer in the planning of field work, logistics and implementation of other field activities 5. Ensure field vehicles, camera-traps and other field equipment (e.g., GPS units, satellite phones, handheld cameras, etc) and the Gerik field office equipment (computers, laptops, printers, etc) are well maintain and are in good working conditions. The assets inventory list and maintenance status of the above items need to be updated regularly in order to facilitate repairs or replacement, where applicable. 6. Maintain the database of camera-trap photographs, sign survey data, species inventory data, scat samples, SMART information database and to ensure the information is compiled and verified before being finalised. 7. Assist in the development of communication materials \xe2\x80\x93 include current approach and case studies on how the project addresses the conservation problems. 8. Conduct relevant awareness talks to the general public and local communities whenever needed. 9. Provide timely and informative updates (in the most appropriate form, verbal or otherwise, dependent on the situation) to the Senior Protection and Monitoring Officers. 10. Supervise field assistants / DPAs for the purpose of field work. 11. Support other units within Tiger Conservation Programme whenever needed. 12. Assist the Senior Tiger Protection and Monitoring Officer and Managers in preparing and formulating any advocacy opportunities and priorities which can be used to promote wildlife conservation in the Tiger Conservation Programme Landscape. 13. Assist the Senior Tiger Protection and Monitoring Officer in providing training for field assistants, partners, stakeholders as and when required. 14. Represent WWF-Malaysia in meetings/conferences or give input to documents/strategies which involve species ecology. Specifications 1. A degree in science, wildlife conservation or similar, is an advantage. 2. Willing to be based at project site. 3. Demonstrates understanding of basic ecological census techniques. 4. Prior experience in fieldwork and willing to accommodate flexible working hours (including weekends) and working in hostile and isolated conditions. 5. Must be computer literate and well versed in both Bahasa Malaysia and English. 6. Holder of a valid driving licence. 7. Pleasant disposition, hardworking, team-player and committed. Must be able to work with minimal supervision, both in the field and in the office. 8. Organising and management skills are required. 9. Good interpersonal skills, innovative thinking, versatile ability to work in a team and work independently. 10. Good understanding of current issues especially having knowledge on environmental and conservation issues. 11. ABLE TO START IMMEDIATELY.
