Job Description

NES Fircroft is currently recruiting for Principal Structural Engineer to be based in our client's office in Kuala Lumpur. They are one of the key players in design, supply, installation, operation and the life extension of floating production solutions for the offshore energy industry.

The Principal Structural Engineer utilizes technical expertise to develop safe and quality solutions in support of project and discipline requirements with minimal guidance. As the Principal Structural Engineer, you ensure successful resolution of complex technical issues related to Structure to meet project and discipline deliverables. You engage with peers across Regional Centers to promote knowledge sharing and act as a consultant and mentor to less experienced engineers to ensure knowledge transfer, product memory, and application of best practices. The Principal Structural Engineer works in conjunction with Discipline Manager, Discipline Leads and engineering staff to seek continuous improvement in both quality and efficiency of work.

ROLE CONTRIBUTION

1. In order to develop technical solutions with a cross-disciplinary approach YOU ARE TO:
1.1. Demonstrate depth and breadth of technical knowledge to ensure technical solutions account for design factors such as constructability, install-ability, operability, vendor capability, as well as schedule and budgetary constraints.
1.2. Utilize technical expertise to identify gaps between the design solution and known product specifications; recommend best alternative solution(s).
1.3. Utilize the Company's Products knowledge and how each product relates to the various disciplines to minimize the negative impact on the completion of key project milestones.
1.4. Communicate the changes that impact the completion of key project milestones to all stakeholders.
1.5. Proactively provide Discipline Manager and/or Discipline Lead with updates regarding activity status, highlight concerns as they arise, and provide guidance to support Discipline Lead to stay within the allocated budget on the project.

2. In order to ensure complex issues for project are successfully resolved YOU ARE TO:
2.1. Utilize established network to resolve complex issues; if issue is outside area of expertise, partner with Technical Expert or Technical Authority to provide Discipline Lead with recommendation or alternative resources to resolve issues.
2.2. Apply technical expertise as required to build confidence in Discipline capabilities.
2.3. May act as Subject Matter Expert with Clients to inform and influence decisions as needed to gain perspective and understanding of expectations and deliverables.
2.4. Ensure lessons learned are documented to enable information sharing on future projects.

3. To ensure technical quality and safety of engineering deliverables YOU ARE TO:
3.1. Actively share experience/knowledge with peers and participate in all applicable project design reviews.
3.2. Challenge technical solutions to ensure all options have been considered and promote best approach; apply expertise in the practical application of new technology in industry.
3.3. Collaborate with Discipline Lead to propose/optimize methodology regarding how to execute the tasks within the framework of project requirements.
3.4. Ensure activities are completed in compliance with applicable policies, codes, standards, regulations and industry practices.
3.5. Promote continuous improvement within the Discipline by maintaining/sharing the latest industry developments; conduct research to solve unique and complex problems.
3.6. Participate in Client facing meetings to influence decision making and resolve complex technical issues based on recognized skills in discipline.

4. *If Acting as Lead Engineer: In order that the Project is properly planned YOU ARE TO:
4.1. Take ownership to define and develop Discipline scope by understanding and evaluating the project requirements.
4.2. Identify dependencies and obtain alignment with project stakeholders to ensure safety and quality are not sacrificed in the effort to meet the project schedule.
4.3. Collaborate with the Discipline Manager/Engineering Project Manager to accurately forecast man-hours, resource needs, and completion date for deliverables.
4.4. Set team expectations for quality standards and enforce safety requirements to meet project needs, corporate standards, and industry regulations.

5. *If Acting as Lead Engineer: In order to effectively lead an engineering team YOU ARE TO:
5.1. Understand project requirements and appropriately assign tasks to team members.
5.2. Ensure each team member understands his/her role and responsibilities.
5.3. Provide coaching and guidance as needed to team members; partner with Discipline Manager for mentoring staff as needed.
5.4. Proactively address any performance issues and partner with Discipline Manager to continuously improve team performance.
5.5. Promote a positive work environment to keep a high level of employee engagement (e.g. by providing timely feedback to team, supporting staff in development needs).

6. *If Acting as Lead Engineer: In order to achieve effective interface management and ensure changes are managed YOU ARE TO:
6.1. Ensure proper communication with internal/external Clients to ensure all parties are promptly informed of project developments.
6.2. Proactively track areas likely to change to reduce the "surprise" element, added costs and delays to project.
6.3. Document all deviations from agreed scope and budget hours to accurately adjust man hour forecast and project completion date for related changes.
6.4. Understand and monitor all interfaces with Class Society and Clients to ensure requirements are properly addressed and relevant documents are reviewed timely.
6.5. Manage the interfaces with Vendor, Subcontractors and third party consultants and ensure relevant documents are reviewed timely and thoroughly.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Civil/Structural/Mechanical Engineering. Professional Engineer Certification is preferred.
  • Minimum of 15 years relevant experience in the design and engineering of topsides structures (fixed offshore platforms or floating offshore structures such as FPSO's and/or Semi Submersibles).
  • Knowledge of AISC, API, DNV, ABS and BV codes and standards is required.
  • Excellent technical know-how and overview throughout structural topsides discipline. Experience with fatigue assessment, blast analysis and structural fire response analysis is an added advantage.
  • Excellent skills and experience of structural analysis software such as SESAM GeniE, STAAD.Pro, SACS, etc. Experience in SESAM Genie software is an added advantage.
