The Project Director - Data Center is responsible for leading and overseeing the planning, design, construction, commissioning, and handover of mission-critical data center projects. This role provides strategic direction, governance, and leadership to ensure that projects meet client requirements for scalability, uptime, security, and sustainability, while being delivered on schedule and within budget.
The Project Director acts as the senior point of contact for clients, government authorities, consultants, and contractors, ensuring alignment with global data center standards and organizational objectives.
Duties & Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Governance
Lead the end-to-end delivery of large-scale, Tier III/IV data center projects across Malaysia and the region.
Develop and implement project governance frameworks, risk management strategies, and quality assurance processes tailored to mission-critical facilities.
Drive financial oversight, including project P&L accountability, budget controls, and cost optimization strategies.
Ensure compliance with international standards (Uptime Institute, TIA-942, ISO 27001, ASHRAE, LEED).
Project & Technical Oversight
Provide overall direction for design management, construction execution, testing & commissioning, and operational handover.
Oversee Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems critical to data center reliability, including power distribution, UPS, generators, chillers, CRAC/CRAH, BMS, and fire suppression systems.
Ensure redundancy (N+1, 2N) and energy-efficiency requirements are met or exceeded.
Lead integrated project delivery across consultants, contractors, and vendors, ensuring seamless execution of fast-track schedules.
Ensure adherence to strict SLA, uptime, and operational resiliency expectations.
Client & Stakeholder Management
Act as the senior liaison for hyperscale, colocation, and enterprise clients.
Build and maintain trusted relationships with clients, authorities, and strategic partners.
Represent the company in major client negotiations, contract discussions, and regulatory submissions.
Oversee client review meetings, performance reporting, and escalation management.
Operational Excellence
Establish continuous improvement practices and adopt emerging technologies for energy efficiency and sustainability.
Drive digital project management tools for better control, reporting, and transparency.
Lead the implementation of Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) systems in line with mission-critical project requirements.
Champion green building certifications (LEED, Green Mark) for sustainable data center operations.
People Leadership
Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Project Managers, Engineers, and technical professionals specializing in mission-critical projects.
Ensure effective workforce planning, training, and succession development.
Foster a collaborative culture across multidisciplinary and international teams.
Provide leadership in conflict resolution, performance management, and organizational development.
Key Skills, Qualifications & Education
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related discipline (Master's Degree / MBA preferred).
Minimum 15 years of project management experience, with at least 8 years leading large-scale mission-critical or data center projects.
Proven track record in delivering Tier III/IV data centers from greenfield to commissioning.
Strong knowledge of MEP systems, structured cabling, security, and data center IT infrastructure requirements.
Demonstrated ability to manage multi-billion ringgit projects with complex stakeholder environments.
Excellent leadership, communication, and negotiation skills with a client-focused mindset.
Familiarity with Uptime Institute, TIA-942, ISO 27001, ASHRAE, and HSE standards.
Experience with service delivery management and SLA compliance is an advantage.
