Malaysia, Malaysia

Job Description

b'

Thank you for your interest in the position of Provost and Group CEO Newcastle University (ASEAN) at Newcastle University. The university exists for the public benefit to advance education, learning and research. We are a world-class university, advancing knowledge, providing creative solutions, and solving global problems. We are proud to be a values-led, research-intensive university that makes a significant contribution to our city, region and globally. Our core values of equality, diversity, inclusion, social and environmental justice, and academic freedom are at the heart of everything we do.

ASEAN is a political and economic union of 10 countries in Southeast Asia with a combined population of more than 660 million people and is predicted to be the fourth largest economy in the world by 2030. We have two overseas campuses in the region, in Singapore and southern Malaysia teaching and researching in medicine and engineering and related disciplines. The two campuses employ 200 staff and deliver UG and PGR programmes to more than 2000 students. We aim to strengthen the future role both campuses play in helping to deliver the university\xe2\x80\x99s vision and strategy.

Several different opportunities and challenges have come together to make this role particularly timely: Our two overseas campuses were established over a decade ago. They both deliver strong education and make a positive contribution to research. We now want to look at the next developmental phase and continue to ensure they are amplifying and enhancing our international profile and our impact in education and research. We want to move to a more integrated three campus model in which the similarities and differences of the three locations and cultures can be embraced to benefit all our colleagues, students, and wider communities. There are changes in the demographics of Malaysia and Singapore and in the skills gaps they have identified for their economies. This informs new education and research programmes we need to consider and act upon. The University\xe2\x80\x99s commitment to inclusive education and to supporting students from diverse backgrounds, languages, and national origins involves continual development of our educational offer; our Singapore and Malaysian activities can play a substantial role in creating a distinctly \xe2\x80\x98Newcastle\xe2\x80\x99 offer to all our students but with the unique experience and connections that come from being located elsewhere in the world. All three of our campuses can provide new opportunities for colleagues and students to gain direct experience of very different cultural, economic and environmental contexts and thus help to bring about a change in the global culture of the university.

This new role creates an opportunity to accelerate the uptake of the opportunities outlined above through the co-creation of an integrated plan for change. You would work across all three faculties, with the Faculty of Science Agriculture and Engineering and the Faculty of Medical Sciences in the first instance but also with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

As Provost and Group CEO Newcastle University (ASEAN) you will report to the PVC of Global and Sustainability and work alongside the Director of ASEAN Strategic Development and Engagement, have direct access to the University Deans for Education and those with Global portfolios, the Academic Registrar, Chief Information Officer, Director of Student Life, and to members of the University Executive Board, and will work as a member of the University Global Committee.

We would like to hear from candidates whose background, ideas and experience of leading organisational change make them feel motivated to apply for this exciting role.

The role will be based in both Singapore and Malaysia. If the successful candidate is currently based in Malaysia or Singapore, we anticipate that will continue, with regular visits to the other country. If the successful candidate is currently based in a third country, we will discuss which of Malaysia or Singapore is the most appropriate work base.

This role is fixed term for a period of 5 years.

The role will close on 30 April 2023.

Newcastle is an inclusive global University community where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. As a University of Sanctuary, we aim to provide a welcoming place of safety for all, offering opportunities to people fleeing violence and persecution.

We are committed to being a fully inclusive Global University which actively recruits, supports and retains colleagues from all sectors of society. We value diversity as well as celebrate, support and thrive on the contributions of all our employees and the communities they represent. We are proud to be an equal opportunities employer and encourage applications from everybody, regardless of race, sex, ethnicity, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, age, disability, gender identity, marital status/civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, as well as being open to flexible working practices.
