The Scientific and Regulatory Affairs (SARA) Specialist works within a team of specialists on scientific and regulatory topics related to coffee, tea and cereal products. The SARA Specialist is part of the Food Compliance team which provides leadership and guidance to assure compliance with legislation, food safety and Company policy.

The SARA team is spread across the globe with a central base in Europe and supports local and global project teams and technology platforms in the development of new products and processes. They collaborate closely with Legal, Product development and Marketing to find solutions and liaise with external bodies and associations on scientific and regulatory affairs.

The SARA Specialist provides guidance to ensure compliance of materials, processes and products with legislation and Company policy.

They actively collaborate with R&D and Marketing and their own team in terms of solving challenges and providing regulatory and nutritional support during the innovation process, to generate competitive advantage and to achieve growth. The role is recognized as technical expert in the function by the stakeholders. Excellent networking and communication skills to build relationships and leverage clear and impactful communication are a prerequisite.

You will play an important role, such as:

  • Conducts accurate label compliance reviews, such as proposing legal designations and acceptable claims wording, taking into account local business requests and legal feedback. Provides legal and accurate ingredients line and nutrition data for food product labels.
  • Assures implementation of correct graphic design (e.g. pictorials). Able to advise and guide team members on artwork design elements.
  • Assures implementation of correct techno-legal label information and JDE standards, e.g. allergen labelling and claims
  • Interfaces with other departments like Product development, Marketing, Legal and Corporate & Governmental Affairs. Advises on risks to the business regarding exemption and deviation requests and where possible suggests alternative solutions.
  • Provides regulatory guidance on compositional requirements to R&D, e.g. checks for acceptable ingredients and their legal limits in recipes.
  • Completes timely reviews and approval of new/novel raw materials and product specifications for regulatory compliance in requested countries, including checking product recipes, nutrition data and allergen information.
  • Adopts and follows JDE technical systems and processes, such as Specifications and CopyDeck.
  • Works in collaboration with the other SARA team members on weekly deliverables.

Qualifications

To succeed in this role, we will need you to have:
  • Bachelor/Master in Food Chemistry, Food Technology, Engineering, Food Science or Nutrition (or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of local market/s food legislation
  • At least 2 years of relevant work experience
  • Fluent English skills both written and spoken
  • Ideally Second (Asian - Malay, Mandarin, Thai) language
  • Awareness of nutrition science and food safety
  • Good verbal/written communication and networking skills
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple time-constrained tasks
  • Resilience to perform in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to challenge status quo and support his/her point of view
  • System acumen and IT skills
