Role Purpose

  • To promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English
  • To support the wider aims of the British Council and its cultural relations mission
Accountabilities
  • Plan and deliver high-quality English language lessons that meet the needs of different customer groups, taking into account individual learning styles - up to the number of contracted teaching hours
  • Monitor progress and provide regular feedback to help manage students\' performance throughout the course, and actively promote learner autonomy and a sense of progress
  • Contribute to the development, evaluation, and improvement of English language courses, materials, and related services, to meet students\' needs by actively working as a member of the teaching team
  • Complete teaching-related administrative tasks to specified standards
  • Actively engage in professional development and performance management to ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning, and maintain the British Council\'s position at the forefront of best ELT practices
  • Contribute to the development of lasting, mutually beneficial relationships by enhancing students\' understanding of contemporary UK
  • Assist the teaching center team in delivering excellent customer service and upholding British Council Values and Behaviours
  • Ensure safeguarding and guidelines are applied and upheld in line with standards and policy for the following areas:
  • Child protection
  • Equal Opportunity and Diversity
  • Health and safety
Qualifications

Essentials
  • Cambridge CELTA/ Trinity Cert TESOL
  • Undergraduate/University degree in any discipline
  • English proficiency across all four skills to IELTS band 8/9 is essential
Desirables
  • Recognized diploma in EFL i.e. Cambridge DELTA/Trinity Diploma or equivalent
  • PGCE/B.Ed. in Primary/Secondary or equivalent
  • CELT-YL extension/TYLEC
Work Experience
  • 2 years post-certificate (i.e., CELTA/Trinity cert TESOL) experience
  • Experience in teaching relevant age groups:
  • Primary aged 6 to 10 (800+ hours)
  • Lower Secondary aged 11 to 14 (800+ hours)
  • Upper Secondary aged 15 to 17 (300+ hours)
  • Business/Corporate (adults) (800+ hours)
Salary & Benefits
  • Salary: MYR 5,887 (point 1) to MYR 7,647 (point 10) on the 18H Teacher salary scale depending on qualification and experience. Any additional teaching hours delivered are compensated with an hourly overtime rate
  • Contract Hours: 29 hours & Contract teaching hours are 18 hours per week
  • Duration: 24 months (Renewable)
  • Accommodation Allowances: Other allowances include an MYR 400 per month housing allowance. We will also put you in touch with a local estate agent, and time off (during non-teaching hours) is given to find accommodation on the first arrival.
  • Annual Leaves: Annual paid leave is 35 days fixed into the academic calendar in addition to applicable observed public holidays
  • Other Allowances: Successful applicants applying from overseas will receive a single, economy-class flight into Malaysia and 2 weeks paid accommodation upon arrival. Baggage allowance and flights for partners or dependents are not applicable for this role.
  • Work schedule: Penang teachers are expected to work both weekend days, with two consecutive weekdays off for over 40 weeks of the year.Most teachers are currently timetabled to teach YL courses, (up to 12 hours across Saturdays and Sundays) with lighter weekdays. While there is some limited adult teaching the bulk of the teaching is with Young Learners.
Additional Information

Passport requirements/ Right to work in the country

The post holder must have the right to work in Malaysia. To obtain a work visa from the Malaysia Immigration Department, expatriate post holders must have:
  • A university degree
  • Recognized teaching qualifications e.g. Cambridge CELTA/Trinity Cert TESOL
  • At least two years of teaching experience
  • Passport must be valid for a minimum of TWO years from the employment start date and contain at least SIX consecutive blank pages for the visa to be issued. The contract is conditional based on the approval of the work visa.
