How can you make a difference?

Under the overall supervision of the Climate and Environment Specialist (UNICEF) with day-to-day supervision by the Youth Environment Living Labs Coordinator, this internship is to support the Climate and Environment team in implementing the climate change and environment agenda, and the Youth Environment Living Labs (YELL) programme in particular. Furthermore, the intern will support UNICEF\'s efforts to make children and young people a focus of climate change strategies and to empower children and young people with knowledge and skills to participate in climate and environmental action.

YELL is a joint programme by UNDP Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei Darussalam and UNICEF Malaysia, supported by Amanah Lestari Alam (ALAM). YELL aims to localize climate narratives and strengthen the ecosystem for youth-led environmental action. It also strives to connect the past, present and future to provide context and networks for action. For more information on YELL, please refer to the website.

The purpose of this internship includes:

  • Support the ongoing work on young people\'s engagement in climate action, both on- and offline, including desktop research, collecting inputs and feedback, mapping stakeholders, key activities and interventions, and documenting good practices and lessons learned reports.
  • Support the development and maintenance of the YELL website as an engagement tool.
  • Support the development and execution of virtual or physical engagement events that convene young climate and environment actors, including stakeholder engagement, development of event collaterals, virtual platform management, and other communications support.
  • Support the documentation and publicity of the work of young climate and environment actors.
  • Support partnership engagement initiatives, including facilitating timely communications, joint content development and joint event management.
  • Support the development and management of knowledge products on climate change, environment, disaster risk reduction as required.
  • Support the review process of climate and environment learning and educational materials such as collecting comments and suggestions, providing recommendations for improvements and strengthening actions.
  • Support the communication efforts in identifying key climate and environmental dates and developing key messages and communication materials, as well as building capacity of young climate advocates.
  • Other tasks that may arise related to the daily activities of the team, including recording meeting minutes and taking field notes.

We are looking for a dynamic person who has a strong interest in climate and environment, rights of young people, content creation, as well as a proactive attitude towards day-to-day challenges. Most importantly, you need to demonstrate your interest and passion about why you want to work with UNICEF and for children and young people.

Qualification:
  • Currently enrolled or graduated either in/from undergraduate level or graduate level school.
  • Prior experience in climate or environment is a requirement.
  • Prior experience in communications and advocacy would be a considerable asset.
  • Have experience in social media content production and digital engagement.
  • Familiar with web management; familiarity with WordPress CMS is preferred.
  • Familiar with graphic design, photography, audio editing, and other communication mediums preferred.
  • Excellent in verbal and written communication in English (including active listening and information synthesis, and strong writing and editing abilities).
  • Proficiency in verbal, written and interpersonal communication in Bahasa Malaysia.
  • Proficiency in verbal, written and interpersonal communication in other languages and dialects common in Malaysia preferred.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work within a multi-cultural team.
  • Previous relevant work or volunteer experience is highly desired.
Requirements:
  • Currently enrolled in a graduate (Master\'s) or undergraduate (Bachelor\'s) degree in the areas of Climate Science/Studies, Communications, Social Sciences, Civil/Mechanical/Environmental Engineering, Energy, Environmental Studies/Management, Economics, Public Policy, Sustainable Development or related field.
  • Demonstrable proof of excellent academic performance. Demonstrable excellence in verbal, written and interpersonal communication in English (including active listening and information synthesis and strong writing abilities).
  • Applicants should submit at least 3 samples of previous work/assignments that demonstrate skills in research, communication and organisation. Such examples can include workplans, essays, presentation slides, proposals, project reports, social media materials, etc.
  • Demonstrable proficiency in verbal, written and interpersonal communication in Bahasa Malaysia or other dialects commonly used in Malaysia.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work within a multi-cultural team.
  • Previous relevant work or volunteer experience is highly desired.
Conditions of the Internship:
  • The intern will receive UNICEF laptop and email account during the internship period.
  • The intern will receive a basic stipend according to UNICEF\'s internal standard.
  • The intern is expected to work in UNICEF\'s office 4 days a week, with 3 of days a week in UNICEF\'s Putrajaya office and one day a week in UNICEF\'s Kuala Lumpur office.
