Location: Miri, Sarawak

The Counsellor will work as part of Curtin Malaysia\xe2\x80\x99s Health, Counselling and Disability team. The incumbent will provide a full range of individual and group counselling, psychological intervention and consultation, consultancy to staff on issues related to students, group programs, required disability services and promotion of Health, Counselling and Disability Services.\xef\xbb\xbf

This includes:

Clinical Management

• Perform psychological assessments to appraise cognitive, emotional, intellectual and behavioural functioning of clients referred to Curtin Malaysia University\xe2\x80\x99s Health, Counselling and Disability Services.
• Undertake individual, couple and group interventions with clients (students, staff and their significant others), utilising a variety of methodologies including behaviour and cognitive therapy and systemic intervention.
• Provide consultation and liaise with academics and external agencies to identify strategies to help individuals cope with a range of psycho-social issues, e.g. mental illness, psychological problems, disability/illness, acculturation and adjustment difficulties.
• Participate in Curtin Malaysia\xe2\x80\x99s Health, Counselling and Disability Services, interdepartmental, and committee meetings for the exchange of current and accurate information regarding clients, the service and the university context.

Education and Research

• Contribute to the knowledge base of Curtin Malaysia, Health, Counselling and Disability Services team in the field of psychology through the provision of one-to-one briefings and contributions to discussion in team meetings.
• Develop and implement preventative educational workshops and programs.
• Participate in research and write research reports.
• Participate in department\xe2\x80\x99s written / verbal reporting.

Evaluation and Planning

• Assist in collection and analysis of data for the evaluation of services provided by Curtin Malaysia University\xe2\x80\x99s Health, Counselling and Disability Services.
• Contribute to Curtin Malaysia University\xe2\x80\x99s Health, Counselling and Disability Services planning and prioritisation of services and identification of relevant performance indicators.

Professional Development

• Maintain currency of knowledge through attendance at conferences, seminars and workshops and accessing relevant literature in journals.

Quality Assurance

• Participate in accreditation of Curtin University\xe2\x80\x99s Health, Counselling and Disability Services and required academic accreditation.

Compliancy and Legislative Knowledge

• Knowledge of current Mental Health, Disability and Counsellors\xe2\x80\x99 legislation and practice.
• Knowledge of current Counselling and Disability policies and procedures of Bentley campus.
• Maintain requirements for registration and certified practice with Board of Counsellors, Malaysia.
• Comply with University policies and procedures and relevant appropriate legislation.
• Meet Occupational Safety and Health, anti-discrimination, equal opportunity and other legislative requirements in accordance with the parameters of the position.

About you

Essential

• Minimum, a bachelor degree in Counselling or Counselling Psychology or equivalent.
• Qualified to be a Registered Counsellor and maintain requirements for registration and certified practice with Board of Counsellors, Malaysia.
• Demonstrated knowledge of short-term methods of intervention for clients with high support needs.
• Proven ability to liaise effectively with a range of other professionals and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
• \xef\xbb\xbf\xef\xbb\xbf\xef\xbb\xbf\xef\xbb\xbfDemonstrated ability to conduct assessments and to apply counselling and psychological interventions relevant to the needs of a culturally diverse tertiary student population.
• Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills including computer literacy with email and internet.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the needs of students.

Desirable

• Proven ability to implement equity and diversity policies and programs.
• Experience in the development and delivery of psycho-education program for staff and students.
• Experience in delivery of training and support services to staff of student residences.
• Experience in leading and working within cross-disciplinary teams to deliver client service.
• Demonstrated experience in the tertiary education sector.
