:DescriptionThe Deputy Provost (Deputy Vice-Principal) is the deputy Chief Executive for Heriot-Watt University Malaysia and reports directly to the Provost and CEO.The Deputy Provost plays a key role in the operation of the Malaysia campus and will contribute to its ambitions for growth and to the in-country and global delivery of the Strategy 2025. Areas of focus include academic portfolio, quality of delivery, regulatory compliance, and enhancing the student experience.The Deputy Provost assists the Schools\' Executive Deans in supporting and line managing the Heads of Schools in Malaysia to ensure the success of the Schools\' ambitions and their educational and research agendas.Key Responsibilities * Leading and managing in-country academic activities (teaching, learning and research), in collaboration with the Executive Deans (currently based in the UK) and the Heads of Schools on the Malaysia campus.

  • Ensuring that the student experience - both academic and social - is of the highest quality and closely aligned with that delivered across the University\'s global operations, whilst ensuring it meets local needs and requirements.
  • Leading the on-campus academic planning and policy and supporting in-country recruitment through the Annual Planning 2.0 process.
  • Overseeing quality assurance as it relates to internal University processes and to external approval from local and internal Professional, Statutory, Regulatory bodies.
  • Developing external networks to support teaching and research collaborations, and to generate additional third-stream income and partnerships.
  • Deputising for the Provost in absentia, both on campus and at meetings with external stakeholders and partners.
  • Collaborating with the Deputy Principal and Associate Principals to help deliver key SPIs of Strategy 2025 e.g., Education and Student Life, Research, Enterprise, Widening Participation, etc.
  • Representing the Malaysia campus on joint court and university executive committees and sub-committees, e.g., UCLT, UCQS, LTAOC, etc.

  • A Professor in a relevant field such as engineering or technology or one of the other disciplines offered in country.
  • PhD in a related field
Desirable:
  • Master or equivalent in appropriate discipline.
  • Experience of UK education.
  • Experience of International education.
ExperienceEssential:
  • Clear communicator with good reading and writing skills; good at understanding and explaining concepts.
  • Ability to conceptualise problems and develop well-reasoned and logical viewpoints.
  • Fluent (verbal and written) in English Proficient in Microsoft Office Software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Hardworking, proactive, willing to learn new things.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexible, self-motivated, and able to plan his/her own work.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Management experience in a University perhaps as a Dean or Head of School.
  • Results focussed.
  • Involving and valuing individuals.
  • Planning and organisation skills.
  • Experience of managing people, budgets, and projects as well as academic activities of teaching, research, and student experience Passion for international working.
  • Energy and resilience.
  • A proven leader, able to envision, empower, encourage, and enable colleagues across all locations to work together to a common purpose.
  • Track record of implementing and managing change.
Desirable:
  • Research experience.
  • Experience of publishing papers in journals/conferences.
  • Successful completion of funded research and/or funded knowledge exchange.
