Job Overview:

The Product Design engineering Director will lead the team to develop the latest generation magnetic recording media, which will be integrated into Western Digital\'s hard disk drive products. This critical role involves collaborating with the R&D and worldwide teams to innovate and productize recording media designs. You will lead a multidisciplinary engineering team, grounded on innovation and implementing best practices, to ensure the timely delivery of new media designs. This pivotal role will help Western Digital deliver best in class data storage products to meet the data storage needs of the world.

Key Responsibilities:

• Deliver new perpendicular recording magnetic designs to meet the areal density requirements (ADC) of new disk drive products.
• Grow ADC at a consistent, predictable rate to align with the product roadmap.
• Starting with technology building blocks from the R&D team, develop recording media designs that can meet the product performance requirements, and be able to scale into high volume manufacturing at the targeted production costs.
• Collaborate with cross functional team members to define product strategies and roadmaps.
• Align engineering efforts with company objectives to ensure time-to-market delivery of products.
• Lead a high performance, cross functional engineering team.
• Act as a technical resource to resolve complex technical challenges.
• Foster a culture of collaboration and innovation within the worldwide development engineering community.
• Provide guidance to team members to enable them to excel and realize their maximum potential.
• Assess staffing needs and recruit top talent to support the product development pipeline.

Qualifications

• Master or PhD degree in Materials Science, Physics, or related engineering field.
• 15+ years of engineering development or R&D for magnetic recording media for hard disk drives.
• Strong technical knowledge in vacuum technology, including physical vapor deposition (PVD) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD).
• 10+ years in a technical leadership role, demonstrating strong problem solving, resource management, and teamwork.
• In depth understanding of disk sputter equipment operation, preferably on Anelva deposition tools.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• PC skills include MS Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Outlook
