Responsibilities:

Manage the legal aspects associated with the Group, Regional and Country transactions, projects, initiatives including matters that are highly complex or have potential for significant legal, financial and /or reputational impact including;

  • oversee all transactional and non-transactional legal work undertaken in respect of MUFGM/MUFG Labuan (the Malaysian entities), and oversee all legal advice given in respect of the Malaysian entitles including advice given by external counsel and internal legal service.
supporting the Group, Regional and Country senior management in the execution of business and operational strategies and initiatives, while ensuring that such business/strategies/initiatives are in compliance of local legal and regulatory requirements.

implement strategic legal policies as well as to ensure the exposure to legal and regulatory risk is managed in a commercially sensitive and practical manner, including responsible for establishing legal risk management framework for the Malaysian entities within MUFG APAC\xe2\x80\x99s risk appetite.

ensure that the APAC regional legal policies and procedures are supported by appropriate local policies and procedures as controls for legal risks; and responsible for establishing testing for controls for legal risks and ensuring smooth delivery of information for risk and controls reporting.

As a member of the APAC Legal function, coordinate with the other members of APAC Legal (and to the extent required, lawyers in Tokyo, EMEA (including Middle East) and the U.S.) to ensure the support offered to business and support functions is of the highest standard and the support is coordinated across APAC.

To manage and drive the Legal Department in Malaysia to be able to:

Provide legal support across the Malaysia entities;

Advice the business and support functions to ensure business plans and objectives for Malaysia and APAC are in compliance with local legal and regulatory requirements.

Ensure smooth communication between country legal, regional legal, and group legal (or other regions), including supporting other legal teams for matters pertaining to the Malaysia entities or Malaysia laws and regulations.

Manage and monitor disputes, litigation and potential litigation in Malaysia.

Manage the Legal function in the Malaysia entities, including managing a team of lawyers in Malaysia that allows the Legal function to achieve the objectives of the broader MUFG Group in addition to that of the Malaysia entities.

Ensure the department is organised and the subordinates are capable of supporting the smooth running of the department. Identify and advise on significant legal and regulatory risks and developments. Manage relationships with external counsel in Malaysia. Participate on relevant management, control and risk committees as appropriate. Undertake any additional duties as required by Country Head / Regional Head of Legal.

Requirements:

Preferably with minimum 12 years of relevant working experience in-house legal counsel/ or as practicing lawyer. Additional relevant experience in other sectors of banking industry will be considered as an advantage.

Applicant must possess at least a recognized bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in law or equivalent from a recognized university/higher learning institution.

Able to effectively communicate in English and Bahasa Malaysia with all levels of internal stakeholders and external regulators/government departments & agencies.

Preferably applicant that have been called to the Bar.

Strong self-motivated person who is able work independently with professional communication, interpersonal, negotiation, analytical and problem-solving skills.

Strong leadership skill, strategic thinking, business acumen and sound people management.
