Job Description


As pioneers in Engineering education and research, the University seeks to appoint a dynamic, enterprising and aspired leader with a passion for excellence and who will join our leadership team in Malaysia to work with colleagues across the University\'s global footprint. The successful candidate should be a professional engineer and an established academic with proven track record of teaching, research and leadership in either Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline. The appointee will be expected to lead both education and research operations of EPS Malaysia. The candidate will also be expected to develop strong links with the industry as well as to provide strategic leadership in the areas of engineering sciences. We expect the successful candidate to undertake significant leadership and managerial role within the Malaysia Campus.

Postholder will be expected to have experience in leading an academic department, managing people, finance and engineering & science laboratories. It is also expected the postholder will be a Fellow of a reputable professional body or working towards a fellowship with a professional body or learned society.

The role will be based at the University\'s campus in Putrajaya, the administrative capital of Malaysia. Programmes will be delivered in English and so fluency in English is essential. A hybrid induction programme will be delivered to all new academic staff upon reporting on Heriot-Watt\'s standards and values, and to give practical experience on preparation, delivery, and assessment of teaching.

Key Duties and Responsibilities


  • Reporting to the Executive Dean of EPS, being member of EPS Executive Committee
  • Contribute to Campus Strategy and operations as a key member of the Malaysia Executive Management Committee, and other local and global University committees, e.g. LTAOC.
  • Assume overall leadership and accountability in making sure that programmes delivered to the right quality and standard and ensure that quality assurance processes, such as student feedback, academic reviews, and the professional accreditation, are carried out effectively and timely.
  • Lead, manage and coach for high performance of a team of academic staff and be responsible for academic planning and workload distribution.
  • Working with the Deputy Provost and Executive Dean, EPS in the selection and appointment of new academics, research, professional services, and laboratory support staff
  • Ensure students well-being and support student activities including managing issues of discipline, appeals and complaints.
  • Assume overall responsibility in ensuring that efficient and effective operations at the EPS (Malaysia) level.
  • Take a leading role in student recruitment and be responsible for the overall growth of the EPS (Malaysia).
  • Undertake teaching and assessment duties on academic programmes. Support colleagues in other Schools at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia in the delivery of courses and other activities to support the delivery of campus\' goals and ambitions.
  • Set a leading example in building and conducting world class research in the University\'s research areas globally.
  • Develop and maintain strong links with business and industry, external organisations, and the education sector.
  • Assist the University leadership in delivering the strategic goals set out in Strategy 2025 and achieve the purpose, mission, and vision of the University globally.
  • Champion new initiatives (portfolio development, AP2.0, etc.) to grow the overall impact of the School with Malaysia and globally.

  • PhD in an Engineering Discipline
  • Eligible to register with Board of Engineers Malaysia as Graduate Engineer
Desirable:
  • Professional Engineer
  • Fellow of a Professional Institution / Society
Experience Essential:
  • Proven track record of teaching and research excellence
  • Demonstrated ability to create and drive growth
  • Ability to work in a complex global setting and be able to lead change
  • Able to create and drive excellence in learning and teaching innovation as well as research outputs
  • Possess a world leading portfolio in research
  • Effectiveness as a research supervisor
Desirable:
  • Incumbent of a similar portfolio currently
  • Strong track record of ability to stimulate growth in an academic organization
  • Experience in management significant budget in a complex environment
  • A track record of generating external research income and publishing research outcomes in high quality academic journals

Special Requirements (if any)
  • Experience in leading and managing an academic department or programme

  • An ability to identify and develop opportunities for personal and collective research

Special Factors (if applicable) Essential:
  • Experience in leading Engineering Accreditation Exercise
Desirable:
  • Experience of working in a transnational education
