Job Description


A. Purpose of the Role

The Legal Editor is responsible for assuring the integrity, utility and currency of the editorial content of publications assigned to the position. This must be done in the context of strict adherence to the publishing schedule and compliance with standards, including editorial benchmarks and quality assurance measures. Close interaction with support staff and operations personnel (where relevant) is required to carry out the role effectively. The Editor is also responsible for assisting the team to meet the team\xe2\x80\x99s portfolio responsibilities.

Additional primary responsibilities of the role include author, freelancer and/or supplier management, control and development of content in line with customer needs, keeping aware of and ahead of competitor publications, conducting an annual product review to assess the performance of the assigned products, building knowledge of the market and assisting subscribers with queries as required.

B. Duties and Responsibilities

Core Accountabilities

Editorial

  • Develop and edit content/manuscript;
  • Ensure adaptation in usage of editorial tools and software;
  • Be responsible for the quality, timeliness of delivery, and responsive to the currency of the content within the portfolio;
  • Perform original research as required;
  • Ensure that developments in the law are monitored;
  • Ensure adaptability in legal technology space;
Project Management
  • Adhere to the publishing schedule for all formats;
  • Implement agreed plans for product enhancements;
  • Collaborate with key contractor, vendor and/or supplier to meet processing benchmarks and delivery of content on time and as per standard required;
  • Work within set commercial parameters.
Process Improvement
  • Develop and implement continuous process improvements to achieve best practice.
  • Implement Operations improvement by use of technology.
Relationships & Communication
  • Support team members as required;
  • Support the in-market commercial product owners with content related queries and developments;
  • Manage relationships with existing authors;
  • Assist Customer Operations with customer queries and issues;
  • Build effective relationships with colleagues, customers (internal and external) and management to ensure efficient execution of tasks and roadmaps;
  • Participate in global operations projects as required.
Product Development
  • Assist with product enhancements and product roadmaps.
  • Assist in competitor benchmarking and ensure product performance metrics are market leading;
  • Develop products/feature according to customer\xe2\x80\x99s expectations;
  • Expansion of content and acquisition of content.

Challenges
  • The key challenge for this role is organizational and time management skills. It is critical to ensure that all deliveries within the team are functioning to a high standard\xe2\x80\x93 and that the output from their roles is delivered in a timely fashion. Often this will require resolution of issues, or escalation of intractable problems and working with various stakeholders.
  • Managing external vendors to support organizational goals while identifying opportunities for costs savings
  • Ensuring internal customer needs are met to support divisional revenue
Decision Making Authority
  • Workflow prioritization in consultation with stakeholders
  • Identification and implementation of workflow improvements and process efficiencies to meet and exceed expectations for delivery of content publishing and strategic projects
2. GENERAL INFORMATION

A. Qualifications/Experience/Knowledge

Education: Specialized/ Technical
  • LLB;
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, Internet skills;
Experience
  • Prior legal practice experience preferred;
  • Experience in publishing is an advantage, with sound working knowledge of publishing workflow from idea conception to delivery to customer.
  • Experience managing external vendors preferred.

  • Superior reading comprehension skills
  • Good communication skills;
  • Proficient in the English Language \xe2\x80\x93 written and spoken.

  • Application of house style and data integrity principles to manuscript as edited and coded
  • Operational author management (note that commissioning and ultimate ownership of the author relationship is with Commercial teams)

  • Assist commissioning editors with commissioning/ decommission by tracking currency and quality of manuscripts
  • Keep ahead of market trends and content matters and make recommendations for content acquisition;
  • Ensure high level of external supplier performance with ongoing implementation of process improvements/ efficiencies and costs savings
