Position purpose

As a Privacy Counsel, you will support the organisations data protection and legal functions. In addition to day-to-day legal support, you will lead the implementation and maintenance of data privacy policies, processes, and compliance initiatives. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure adherence to data protection regulations and assist in embedding privacy best practices across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

Data Privacy & Compliance

  • Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of data privacy policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Monitor regulatory developments in data protection and assess their impact on business operations.
  • Conduct privacy impact assessments (PIAs) and support risk mitigation strategies.
  • Assist in responding to data subject requests (DSRs) and regulatory inquiries.
  • Execute data governance policies and initiatives such as data mapping, data quality and data sharing.
  • Support internal privacy audits, compliance assessments, and incident response management.
  • Work closely with the IT and Technology team to ensure appropriate technical and organisational measures for data protection.
  • Assist in vendor due diligence by reviewing data processing agreements and ensuring third-party compliance.
  • Develop and implement appropriate employee privacy training and awareness programs.
Legal Advisory & Contract Management
  • Provide legal advice on contractual and other legal matters related to the business.
  • Draft, negotiate, and review a wide variety of contracts, including tenancy, retailer, distribution, sub-distribution, service, and E-Commerce agreements.
  • Manage the contract lifecycle, including renewals, terminations, and enforcement of contractual terms.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Finance, Corporate Development, and business teams, to facilitate decision-making and mitigate legal risks.
  • Liaise with senior management and key stakeholders on legal and compliance matters.
  • Manage external legal counsel where necessary to provide legal support for the business activities.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Law with 4-6 years of experience in data privacy, compliance, legal, or related roles, preferably in a multinational or retail/distributor environment.
  • Professional certifications in data protection and privacy (e.g., CIPM, CIPP, CIPT) are highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of global and regional data protection regulations (e.g., GDPR, PDPA) and their practical implications.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with stakeholders at various levels.
  • Proven track record of implementing data privacy programs and driving compliance initiatives.
  • Ability to navigate complex regulatory landscapes and translate legal requirements into actionable policies and practices.
  • May be required to travel based on business needs.
