Power Systems is a global function that designs and develops Dysons internal technologies that enable most of our products. The team has experts in wide range of areas (mechanical, electrical, software, project management) and is responsible of the development from early stages through to production. Based in Dysons RDD facility you will be joining the Motor Drives and Advanced Control (MDAC) team. The MDAC team form part of the Power Systems Group and is a significant part of Dyson RDD with a growing team of more than 100 highly skilled engineers, scientists and technicians in its UK, Singapore, Malaysia and Philippines offices. The Group focuses on researching and developing cutting-edge electric motors, drives and control systems for integration into existing and future Dyson products. About the role Being part of the team working on the Dyson Digital Motor (DDM), this role primarily focuses on the verification of new and existing DDMs, associated products and electronics. This will involve the characterisation, test and analysis of motors, power electronics drives and control systems, helping to ensure that the final products meet their performance requirements as we develop them all the way into production. Some of your tasks could include: Working closely with the Lead Test Engineer and Motor Drive Engineers, you will follow existing, and create your own, Test Methods for system characterisation (and analysis) for control system validation, thermal mapping and user interaction of motors, power electronics and associated products as required. As directed, complete analysis of test data from motor and product verification to identify drift, issues, non-compliance and opportunities for improvement and optimisation both on an ongoing basis and where specific issues arise. Generate high-quality test reports with all data and findings from all work undertaken. Liaise with the motor drives, control and software engineers to create electronics test rig set ups with a focus on automated testing. Identification of issues and repair of commonly used electronics prototypes for testing. Provide support to engineers with trial-build or field-return failure analysis, quality and reliability improvements for developing products: completing root cause analysis of any failures of the motor or associated drive and control system, reporting the findings back to the engineers or managers where applicable. Assist other engineers within the team with the creation and review of documents such as design schematics, design notes, FMEA, Failure analysis reports, technical review documents and part approval to ensure the lessons learned from tests are captured. Be able to apply your skills to other areas of work and tasks within the business as may be required of you on occasion for the benefit of the wider team. This could include, but is not limited to, engineering design work, test rig building and production equipment commissioning. About you Degree (or equivalent) in (Electrical/Electronics) plus demonstrable experience of equivalent-level working in test and verification environments. Experience in a range of aspects of electronics test including some of: power electronics, motor control, battery management, analogue, digital and sensing technologies. Some experience in fault finding electro-mechanical systems, repairing them and suggesting improvements. Comfortable in a laboratory environment with experience using power sources, oscilloscopes and soldering equipment and taking precise measurements. Strong communication and team working skills. Be flexible and open-minded to respond quickly to changes in project priorities. Be able to demonstrate sound theoretical knowledge, reasoning and problem solving skills in engineering. Be able to clearly report progress and results, in-person as well as with producing a high standard of written documentation. Proactive and persistent nature demonstrated by an inquisitive approach. Be a creative thinker and problem solver highly self-motivated and self-reliant with enthusiasm for motors, power systems and Dyson products. Excellent communication in English (both verbal & written). Desirable Experience: Experience with high-volume manufacturing and on-line measurement of system performance. Experience with MATLAB or Minitab for data analysis. Be proficient in the use of TestStand for client sequence development. Working knowledge of the fundamentals of electromagnetic machine operation particularly single and multi-phase permanent magnet motors. An appreciation of motor control techniques for low and high speed, single-phase and multi-phase permanent magnet motors. Working knowledge of schematic capture, PCB layout and associated software. Malaysia Development Centre: A world-class development centre In 2003, after 10 years of rapid expansion in the UK, Malaysia was chosen as an additional location to allow the continued growth of Dysons manufacturing and testing facility. It was close to component manufacturers and much of the supply chain, as well as providing very high levels of manufacturing quality. Over time, Dyson operations expanded in Malaysia. Having started out with a team of just 10, today our Malaysia Design Centre has grown to be a base for more than 1,200 skilled Dyson people working across Engineering, IT, Finance, Creative and HR. Our Johor facility had humble beginnings, but what was originally a few small labs covering 350m is now a bustling campus occupying 50,000m, including state-of-art acoustic chamber, environmental chamber, and rapid prototyping facilities.
