Staff Geologist

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Job Description

Client: A subsidiary of a leading oil and gas exploration and production company.

Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Type of hiring: Contract

Key Objectives:

  • Develop, sustain, and assess a variety of 3D static geological models to aid in reservoir characterization and dynamic reservoir simulation studies. This involves leading efforts to comprehend the distribution of resources and reserves and formulate an optimal field development strategy for both deep and shallow water projects in the Sabah basins.
  • Lead or participate in regional studies to evaluate basin prospectivity and the petroleum system, supporting ongoing production in new or existing development fields. Additionally, explore potential value-adding opportunities within and around the development acreage, particularly in a complex tectonic setting involving deep-water depositional systems and shallow water environments.
Responsibilities:
  • Construct distinct static geological models incorporating multiple subsurface scenarios that capture uncertainties in structure, stratigraphy, and petrophysics. This is essential for reserves assessment, history matching, and optimizing production in both deep and shallow water development scenarios. This task requires expertise in modeling using seismic, petrophysical, and production data to constrain geological model facies, along with knowledge of analogue data to constrain property distributions within the modeled facies.
  • Generate comprehensive reports on model construction and contribute to the reporting of hydrocarbons-in-place estimation. Additionally, update and prepare field development plans.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, offering geological input for regional studies and petroleum system assessments. This involves developing or reviewing new prospects (Near Field Exploration) and appraisal opportunities for Sabah field development.
  • Possess extensive knowledge of stratigraphic, structural, and petroleum systems data types for integration purposes, trend identification, and the explanation/prediction of phenomena.
  • Provide geological support and advice in opportunity generation, covering planning, evaluation, and/or execution of Full Field Review (FFR), Field Development Plan (FDP), appraisal, or infill well programs/well work opportunities.
  • Lead technical teams in data room evaluations or farm-in/farm-out opportunities as required.
  • Oversee all geological aspects, including stratigraphy and sedimentology, for development projects in the Sabah Petroleum Department, with a strong preference for geological understanding of the Sabah region.
  • Conduct resource assessments for all oil and gas fields, offering technical inputs consistent with industry practices through the integration of geological, petrophysical, and dynamic reservoir data.
  • Provide advice, quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC), and mentor junior staff in all related geological work.
  • Plan and manage studies conducted by geological service contractors in a timely and cost-efficient manner, when applicable.
  • Prepare, present, and defend technical positions to management, partners, and PETRONAS
Qualifications:
  • Possession of a relevant degree, with a preference for a postgraduate qualification.
  • Extensive experience of more than 16-20 years in multiple basins with an Exploration and Production (E&P) company, demonstrating diverse expertise in exploration, appraisal, and development.
  • Proven track record in integrating geological, geophysical, petrophysical, and reservoir engineering data to conduct thorough and comprehensive basin evaluations.
  • Demonstrable skills in key areas of Structural, Stratigraphy, and Sedimentology, coupled with a solid understanding of other related disciplines.
  • Hands-on experience in resource and risk assessment, as well as expertise in field development, well planning, and geological operations.
  • Familiarity with formation evaluation, sequence stratigraphic concepts, and proficiency in seismic data interpretation and mapping. Significant positive consideration given for experience with Petrel and geomodelling.
  • Software proficiency in Petrel, Geox, MMRD, Crystal Ball, ToolBox, or @Risk.
  • Highly preferred: Geological understanding specific to the Sabah region.
