Professional, Full Time (Contract)

The Bioprocess Technology, Technical Officer is responsible for supervising and improving research activities in bioprocessing. This includes ensuring optimal conditions for equipment, managing inventory accurately, ensuring that laboratory operations adhere to the required biological safety standards, and offering technical support for research projects.\xef\xbb\xbf

Key Responsibilities:

Equipment Management

  • Plan and implement a preventive maintenance schedule for laboratory equipment to minimize downtime and ensure optimal functionality. This includes routine inspections and calibration.
  • Coordinate equipment calibration to ensure that instruments and sensors provide accurate measurements for process control and data collection.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions promptly. Arrange for necessary repairs, including working with external service providers when required.
  • Keep detailed records of equipment maintenance, calibration, and repairs. Ensure compliance with documentation and traceability requirements.
  • Train users in the correct use of laboratory equipment and ensure that they understand safety protocols. Provide ongoing support to users, addressing any concerns or questions.
  • Assist in the selection and procurement of laboratory equipment, considering factors such as capacity, scalability, and compatibility with the intended processes.
  • Oversee the installation and commissioning of laboratory equipment, ensuring that it meets regulatory and safety standards. Validate equipment to ensure accurate and reliable performance.
Inventory Management
  • Maintain an accurate inventory management system to monitor stock levels, including reagents, chemicals, consumables, and equipment.
  • Maintain a robust tracking and labeling systems to monitor the use and expiry dates of materials, ensuring efficient utilization and preventing waste.
Safety and Compliance
  • Advise lab management of the necessity to manage biohazardous materials, maintain contamination control, adhere to appropriate biological safety levels, handle biological waste effectively, address gas and pressure hazards, and establish a comprehensive plan for emergency responses.
  • Stay updated on safety regulations and make necessary recommendations for improvements.
  • Adhere to and enforce safety protocols to maintain a secure working environment.
Collaboration
  • Foster collaboration between the bioprocessing team and other departments within the organization, such as research and development, quality control, and regulatory affairs.
Regulatory Knowledge
  • Stay up to date with relevant local, national, and international regulations, standards, and guidelines pertaining to bioprocessing, laboratory operations, and biological safety.
  • Ensure that all regulatory documents, such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), laboratory notebooks, and compliance records, are accurately maintained and readily accessible for audits and inspections.
Environmental Monitoring
  • Conduct environmental monitoring of the laboratory, including air quality, cleanliness, and sterility to maintain product quality.
Project Support
  • Provide technical support for research and development projects, assisting in the achievement of project milestones and goals.
Selection Criteria
  • Minimum, a bachelor degree in Bioprocess Engineering Technology or relevant field.
  • A deep understanding of bioprocessing principles, including upstream and downstream processes, cell culture, fermentation, and bioreactor operation.
  • Knowledge of microbiology, cell biology, and genetics as they relate to bioprocesses, including cell lines, microorganisms, and enzymatic reactions.
  • Familiarity with the engineering aspects of bioprocesses, such as mass and energy balances, transport phenomena, and process kinetics.
  • Strong analytical, attention to details and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to interact and communicate (oral and written) effectively and professionally with staff and students at all levels.
