Responsible for providing comprehensive legal advice to senior management and all global businesses and functions, the team offers a diverse range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all countries and territories in which our businesses operate.We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join this team in the role of Assistant Legal Counsel.Principal Accountabilities:The Assistant Legal Counsel provides expert and professional legal advice, guidance and support to ensure that the legal and reputational risks faced by the area of coverage are identified, reported and mitigated. This role will typically report to an Associate General Counsel or Senior Legal Counsel.The successful candidate will report to the Senior Legal Counsel, Markets and Securities Services / HBMS Head of Legal and will be based in Malaysia.
The primary focus of the role is to ensure that consistently high-quality legal support is provided to the Markets and Securities Services (MSS) business in Malaysia. The jobholder is expected to support MSS business of HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad, HSBC Amanah Malaysia Berhad and HSBC (Malaysia) Trustee Bhd. This entails:

  • Working with the MSS Senior Legal Counsel to implement and communicate the strategic and operational objectives of the Global Legal Function across the Conventional and Amanah MSS business and identifying, formulating and communicating policies and procedures in line with these objectives.
  • Providing proactive legal advice, guidance and support to Conventional and Amanah MSS business stakeholders, and to other business areas and functions as required to ensure that the Group\xe2\x80\x99s exposure to legal risk is managed effectively.
  • Supporting MSS business stakeholders, on a range of transactional and legal matters including business-led projects and initiatives.
  • With respect to the Securities Services business, the role is both advisory and transactional in nature and will support a business which is growing, high volume and with frequent demanding deadlines.
  • With respect to the Markets business, the role is advisory in nature, including coordination with regional legal teams that support Markets documentation and transactions.
  • Maintaining and observing HSBC internal control standards, implement and observe Group Compliance Policy, including the timely implementation of recommendations made by internal/external auditors and external regulators. Foster a compliance culture and implement Group Compliance Policy by managing compliance risk in liaison with the Regulatory Compliance and Financial Crime Compliance functions.
Requirements
  • Qualified Lawyer with 2-5 years\' experience.
  • Knowledge and experience of markets, derivatives, banking, corporate and securities law concepts and a working knowledge of the laws in the major jurisdictions in which HSBC operates;
  • Corporate experience and Compliance experience an advantage, but not essential;
  • Good knowledge of the HSBC Group corporate structures, its business and personnel and a clear understanding of HSBC\xe2\x80\x99s corporate culture;
  • Ability to prioritise and multitask;
  • Good inter-personal skills and ability to build relationships across business lines and within local Legal and the Global Legal Function;
  • Developing lateral thinking / problem solving skills;
  • Possess working knowledge in Islamic finance and Shariah principles in Malaysia for the purpose of providing guidance and support on MSS transactional matters;
  • Developing ability to influence.
