:

The Director of Research & Enterprise (Malaysia) is a values-led and purpose driven leader who is able to inspire purpose driven research and will continue to build research capacity and lead on the development of entrepreneurial ambitions on Malaysia campus, providing in country support to help deliver Strategy 2025 by developing and embedding research and business engagement. This will require undertaking personal research, networking, intelligence gathering and securing external funding. It is expected that the successful candidate will actively drive the external profile and engagement of the Campus, within the international context of Heriot-Watt University. There will also be a requirement to support teaching activities as necessary and to mentor and coach other academics in Malaysia, leading by the example. The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with both the leadership team in Malaysia and the UK.

The role will be working with the Deputy Principal (Research & Innovation) and Deputy Principal (Enterprise & Business) on the delivery of the strategy and Research & Enterprise implementation plan.

The Director of Research & Enterprise (Malaysia) will report to the Provost & Chief Executive Officer (Malaysia), who is responsible for the overall operation of the Campus and will be a member of the executive management team of the Malaysia Campus.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The University seeks to appoint a Director of Research & Enterprise (Malaysia) to provide continuation of leadership, vision and strategic direction for the Campus.

The responsibilities for the role are:

  • Develop, own and promote the Heriot-Watt Malaysia research vision, and deliver on high level ambitions and defined business plan objectives; boosting international collaboration and links with other HWU campuses;
  • Lead own area of research, building this in (and from) Malaysia, independently securing external funding for the purpose, publishing original research and scholarship in international publications and maintaining a leading international reputation;
  • Support the delivery of Strategy 2025 Pioneering in Research & Enterprise theme through identifying and promoting individual and collaborative research opportunities, fostering a culture of interdisciplinary research and cultivating start-up and entrepreneurial activities at Malaysia campus;
  • Membership of the University Committee for Research and Innovation (UCRI), contributing to research strategy and identifying opportunities for cross-School collaboration;
  • Represent the Campus's research to external bodies (such as funding agencies, research councils, industry, and, the relevant Schools and the University);
  • Together with other Directors of Research, strive to foster and support cross-school challenge led research and enterprise activity;
  • Exercise academic leadership for their subject area's teaching and scholarly activities;
  • Working with the University to leverage research funding;
  • Develop the campus's framework for entrepreneurial activities and be responsible for increasing alternative income generated from activities related to entrepreneurship;
  • Jointly, with the Finance Manager (FM), review and agree the financial aspects of all research and enterprise proposals generated by the academic staff, liaising with Principal Investigators and Co-Investigators as appropriate;
  • In consultation with the Director of Learning and Teaching (DLT) in their School, advise the HoS on workload allocations for academic staff;
  • Liaising with the appropriate Professional Services colleagues, oversee the implementation and maintenance of an accurate database of research metrics, including research grant income, research outputs, citations, PhD student supervisions and PhD student graduations, at the level of individuals, Research Institutes and School;
  • Facilitate responses to University consultations related to research and enterprise and advise on the impact of research and enterprise policies (both internal and external) on growth and research intensity;
  • Liaise with the Ethics Committee to ensure that best practise is followed;
  • Oversee and monitor the implementation of internal peer-review for research applications;
  • Liaise with researchers and RES to ensure timely approval and submission of research proposals;
  • Allocate and report on share of centrally allocated resource (e.g. EPSRC DTP and James Watt Scholarships) for the support of Post-Graduate Research Student;
  • Provide the University Higher Degrees Committee with an overview of quality issues pertaining to research students;
  • Undertake administrative, representative and associated tasks as required

Education, Qualifications & Experience

Essential:
  • A Professor with PhD or equivalent higher degree
  • A strong track record of consistently generating research funding
  • Experience of developing and leading interdisciplinary
  • Evidence of prior leadership and delivery of complex, multi-disciplinary research projects
Desirable:
  • Proven track record of initiating, implementing, and delivering partnerships with industry and public agencies to leverage external funding and other available resources.
