Purpose of the job The purpose of this job is to support activities under the Gunung Lesung-Ulu Sebuyau (GLUS) wildlife connectivity project in terms of its planning, implementation and monitoring of project objectives, outputs and activities related to sustainable agroforestry and habitat restoration in support of community livelihoods and conservation. The Gunung Lesung and Ulu Sebuyau National Parks, which are protected area habitats for orang-utans are not connected. A wildlife connectivity has been proposed to increase the contiguous habitat for orang-utans. This will increase their adaptive capacity and climate resilience in the long term. The land in between the two national parks is populated and used by communities. The interventions needed are to engage with communities on orang-utan conservation; set aside area for wildlife corridor; provide alternative supplementary livelihood income for communities; and promote co-management of the area for community use and as wildlife habitat. This job will be guided by and will contribute towards the achievement of the Gunung Lesung-Ulu Sebuyau Wildlife Connectivity Proposal and the Sarawak Conservation Programme (SCP) Strategy (FY21-FY25). Its outcomes will also contribute to the broader WWF-Malaysia Strategy 2021-2030 and Global Programme Framework (or their revised versions) directly or indirectly. Key Outputs Effective implementation of the work plan and delivery of the key outputs, including timely reporting and all other relevant reports as per the wildlife connectivity proposal for GLUS. The strategic focus for this position will be on the implementation of habitat restorations and sustainable agroforestry for community livelihoods. Preparation of reports for periodic reporting to the key donor, quarterly progress reports, technical project report, project finance reporting, minutes of meetings and field reports for activities done. Professional and good working relationships with communities and other stakeholders (internal and external) is strongly maintained. Data analysis and reports on the fieldwork undertaken to build scientific baseline and knowledge as well as inputs into the formulation of strategy, recommendations and advocacy / communication materials for the establishment of restoration and sustainable agroforestry-based community livelihoods in alignment with habitat and wildlife conservation for the area. Major Activities The role of the Agroforestry & Restoration Officer is to support the Gunung Lesung-Ulu Sebuyau (GLUS) Corridor for Orang-utan Project to implement the activities required to establish sustainable community livelihoods in support of conservation for orang-utan. The role requires engaging and working with :- a) GLUS (Wildlife and Habitat Conservation) Programme Officer b) CEE Manager for guidance on community engagements and compliance with WWF\'s Environmental and Social Safeguards (ESSF) All the relevant parties involved to coordinate activities for the community consultations, capacity building, field studies and surveys, effective implementation and monitoring of forest restoration and agroforestry for livelihoods. Plan, implement and monitor activities under the work plan of the Corridor for Orang-utan (Linking Protected Areas for Orang-utan Conservation and Community Livelihood in Gunung Lesung and Ulu Sebuyau, FY23 - FY25), with particular focus on restoration and agroforestry implementation with communities. Consolidate information to monitor and ensure good practices are applied for restoration and agroforestry implementation and that it is aligned with the conservation aspirations of the Project. Engage and work with private sector partners and relevant government agencies to secure support and collaborative actions for initiating reforestation and agroforestry livelihood activities; and other relevant agencies and civil societies where applicable. Work with the SCP Communications Team to prepare communications and educational materials necessary for creating awareness and driving stewardship among the stakeholders and the public for this area. Work with the GLUS (Wildlife and Habitat Conservation) Programme Officer and the SCP Programme Leader in the preparation of technical / advocacy papers and presentations for targeted audience (e.g. government authorities, project partners), including representing WWF-Malaysia in external meetings related to the Project. Prepare progress, technical and budget reports for submission to the donor agency, and this includes Technical Progress Reports, R3 budget reports, and workplans. Prepare and provide meeting minutes and regular updates on the progress of the assigned project components and other project related inputs as required for purposes such as revising and refining project strategy and work plan, internal and external reporting (periodically according to specified reporting schedule and / or as required), project monitoring and evaluation. Conduct relevant training, awareness and educational activities in this area in support of good forest restoration and agroforestry implementation and conservation. Supervise Short-term Contracts / Volunteer(s) / Interns as and when they are required for the successful implementation of the project. Participate wholeheartedly in the general activities of WWF-Malaysia, particularly events and activities that require the full support and participation of all staff, whether or not the focus of any particular event or activity has any bearing on the job description and assigned project objectives and activities. In the course of performing the duties as set out in this , the incumbent may be exposed to challenging working conditions, especially for field-based staff members. Technical Key Competencies Technical knowledge on aspects of good forest and habitat restoration practices, agroforestry/agroecology, functional ecology and conservation. Familiarity with methodology for best management practices related to forest and habitat restoration and agroforestry. Understanding of social impact assessments and effective community engagement approaches. Specifications This position will require the following specification at the time of offering or recruiting. Persons with qualifications and abilities that \'best match\' these specifications may also fulfill this role. Not averse to field work or field conditions. Must have a passion for conservation work in the field and working with communities. A Bachelor\'s Degree in a field relevant to forest and habitat restorations/sustainable forest management, agroforestry applications and ecology or a related subject. Candidate with working experience in related field is encouraged to apply. Those with specific field experience for managing communities in reforestation or agroforestry work will be an advantage. A demonstrable understanding of conservation, environmental and social safeguards and community engagement. Experience with community engagement, and application of GIS tools for data collection and monitoring would be an advantage. Ability to write and prepare communication and education materials and run training workshops would be an advantage. Mature, able to work with minimal supervision, and have high initiative for self-monitoring and completing assigned tasks. Excellent written and oral skills in both English language and Bahasa Malaysia. Ability to communicate in a Sarawak native language is an advantage. Must be computer literate and have the ability to use appropriate technology for presentation to partners, stakeholders and potential donors. Organising, coordination and people engagement skills. Good interpersonal skills, innovative thinking, versatile ability to work in a team and work independently. Do not have any criminal record Good understanding of current issues especially having knowledge on environmental and conservation issues. Salary Range RM3600 - RM4000 (Commensurate with qualifications and experience)
