In the beginning of 2020, Panthera incorporated an office in Malaysia - Panthera Wild Cat Conservation Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. (Panthera Malaysia). Panthera\'s Project Kenyir (formerly known as Project Harimau Selamanya) started in 2014 and has been focusing on the monitoring and protection of the Malayan tiger ( Panthera tigris jacksoni ), as well as all other wild cat species in the Kenyir-Taman Negara Core Area in Terengganu. The project\'s main objectives are to stabilize and recover the population of tigers and other wild cats in the landscape following the Panthera\'s Regional Development Strategy for South and Southeast Asia in Malaysia. As a Research Officer for Panthera\'s Project Kenyir, s/he shall work in a team to carry out the fieldwork required to fulfill the project\'s monitoring and research activities with the aim to study and conserve the wild cat population in the identified forest reserves that buffer the Kenyir-Taman Negara Core Area. Specifically, the Research Officer is required to fulfil the deliverables under the \'Monitoring and Protection of the Malayan Tiger and Other Wildlife Species Outside of the Taman Negara-Banjaran Titiwangsa Landscape Program\' of Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) grant, hereinafter referred to as the \'OTNBT Work\'. S/he will do so by adhering to the code of conduct and standard operating procedures of Panthera Malaysia. As an employee of Panthera Malaysia, s/he will uphold the organisation\'s values and operating principles and maintain a professional work etiquette at all times. S/he may be required to assist with other projects of Panthera in other field sites from time to time for transfer of knowledge, skills and experience, at the discretion of the Malaysia Country Manager as and when needed. The Research Officer will be required to oversee and execute the biological monitoring activities to understand the status of Kenyir\'s wild cat population and their prey in order to inform conservation strategies. S/he should be equipped with the right skills, knowledge and experience to make sound decisions in the field to guide their field team safely as well as lead briefings and debriefs for camera trapping fieldwork. S/he will report to the Project Coordinator of Project Kenyir/Country Manager of Panthera Malaysia. Specific Responsibilities Include Plan and execute the monitoring activities under the OTNBT Work. Assist the Project Coordinator to oversee and manage field assistants and work with the Wildlife Analyst to execute the wildlife monitoring surveys diligently, safely, and in a timely manner. Participate in the implementation of monitoring activities involving camera traps. Upkeep the inventory of all equipment used for biological monitoring activities, including camera traps, cable locks, batteries, etc. related to the OTNBT Work. Analyse the related wildlife data and work alongside other analysts on the team to ensure information is amalgated to inform the overall strategy for wild cat protection. Process and catalogue all wildlife data from the biological monitoring surveys under the OTNBT Work project sites. Produce regular monthly reports on wildlife and all monitoring activities pertaining to the OTNBT Work in a timely manner. Assist in the collection of patrol data to be stored into the Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool (SMART) database. Maintain a camera trap database on SMART Field Sensors Assist in the preparation of maps and equipment for patrols, briefing and debriefing sessions. Participate and lead in briefing, strategy planning, and debriefing sessions as and when required. Assist in the preparation of post operation reports. Essential Duties The essential job functions of a Research Officer of Project Kenyir are as follows: Establish and maintain good relations with partners and stakeholders of the project. Ensure professional conduct within the team as well as with parners and stakeholders of the project, including government representatives. Ensure that all assigned activities are consistent with the schedule and all outputs are delivered on time and at the desired quality. Keep abreast with current research and developments in biodiversity monitoring and wildlife crime science. This may require attending various meetings, workshops, conferences and training programmes. Be familiar and comply with the policies and guidelines set out in the Panthera Employee\'s Handbook ensuring that the code of conduct & ethics and \'Patrol Standard Operating Procedures\' are followed at all times. Be familiar and comply with Panthera\'s programmatic vision, objectives and plans, and intellectual property rights. Ensure compliance with all applicable national laws and regulations of Malaysia.
