Curtin University Malaysia is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Technician to oversee our Facilities Maintenance Department. The ideal candidate will act as a senior handyman, supervising and training a team of technicians specialized in civil, mechanical, electrical, and air conditioning maintenance. This role is pivotal in ensuring that all university facilities are maintained to the highest standards, ensuring a safe and functional environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Supervision and Coordination of Technical Staff:

  • Oversee the daily operations of civil, mechanical & electrical (M&E), and air conditioning technicians.
  • Schedule and assign tasks to technicians, ensuring efficient allocation of resources.
  • Monitor team performance and provide feedback for continuous improvement.
2. Facility Inspections and Maintenance Oversight:
  • Conduct quarterly thorough inspections of university facilities to assess and identify maintenance and repair needs.
  • Ensure timely and effective resolution of identified issues, prioritizing critical maintenance tasks.
  • Oversee the execution of both routine and complex maintenance projects.
  • Review and evaluate technical issues and reports from Technicians.
3. Preventive Maintenance and Safety Compliance:
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs to prolong facility life and prevent disruptions to daily operations.
  • Regularly review and update maintenance procedures to comply with evolving safety standards and regulations.
  • Conduct safety audits and ensure all activities comply with local, state, and federal safety laws.
4. Emergency Response and Troubleshooting:
  • Lead the response team for emergency maintenance issues, ensuring rapid and effective resolution.
  • Provide expert troubleshooting support for complex technical issues.
5. Training and Skill Development:
  • Design and conduct training programs for new and existing technical staff to enhance their skills and knowledge.
  • Mentor junior technicians, providing guidance and support for their professional development.
  • Stay updated with the latest technological advancements and incorporate relevant training.
6. Inventory and Resource Management:
  • Manage and maintain an inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies, ensuring their availability and optimal condition.
  • Forecast and procure necessary materials in a cost-effective manner.
  • Conduct periodic audits of resources to optimize inventory management.
7. Vendor and Contractor Management:
  • Coordinate with external contractors and service providers for specialized maintenance tasks and projects.
  • Evaluate vendor performance and ensure adherence to contractual obligations and quality standards.
  • Negotiate contracts and manage relationships with suppliers and third-party service providers.
8. Reporting and Documentation:
  • Prepare detailed monthly reports and technical reports on maintenance activities, challenges, and resource utilization.
  • Document all maintenance work, maintaining accurate records for future reference.
  • Analyze maintenance data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
9. Budgeting and Financial Oversight:
  • Assist in the development and management of the maintenance budget.
  • Monitor expenditures and implement cost-saving measures without compromising service quality.
  • Provide input for financial planning and forecasting related to maintenance activities.
10. Collaboration and Communication:
  • Work closely with other university departments to align maintenance activities with broader institutional objectives.
  • Communicate effectively with all levels of staff, from technicians to university leadership.
  • Establish a culture of open communication and teamwork within the maintenance department.
Qualification and experience:
  • Diploma or higher in Engineering, Facility Management, or related field.
  • At least 10 years of experience in facilities maintenance, with a focus on civil, M&E, and air conditioning systems.
  • Proven experience in a supervisory or leadership role.
