Job Purpose CAO is responsible for providing strategic and high-level academic support to the Chief Executive Officer to ensure the delivery of UoSM strategy and shaping below UoSM\'s academic vision: In collaboration with the CEO and UoSM Board, support the development, delivery, and performance monitoring of UoSM\'s strategy as part of the University of Southampton\'s International Strategy. Develop and implement a comprehensive academic development strategy that aligns with UoSM\'s goals and objectives. Identify opportunities for growth, innovation, and diversification. Build and maintain a robust network of contacts within UoSM academic programme, schools, government, and the education industry. Collaborate closely with the University of Southampton (UoS) UK to align academic strategies with business development and enterprise initiatives to promote a seamless integration of academic and business goals. Attract new clients and partners, negotiate agreements, and foster relationships to enhance UoSM\'s reputation and reach. Ensure robust processes and procedures are in place to support the effective and efficient delivery of all academic functions. Provide effective leadership to all academic staff and academic leads. Act as an interface between cognate academic, operational and professional services at the University of Southampton to ensure appropriate academic standards and excellence are maintained. Support the CEO and the COO in establishing and nurturing relationships with local, national, and international stakeholders to ensure the growth and success of UoSM. Provide effective leadership to all professional service staff. Act as an interface between cognate professional services at the University of Southampton to ensure appropriate academic standards relating to student admissions, marketing, etc are maintained. Support the CEO in establishing and nurturing relationships with local, national and international stakeholders to ensure the growth and success of UoSM. Key accountabilities/primary responsibilities 1. Academic Provide visionary academic leadership to enhance the academic quality and reputation of the institution by leading the development and evaluation of academic programs and curriculum to ensure they align with UoSM goals, competitive industry trends and MQA requirements. Responsible for the overall success of UoSM academic programme and schools encompassing programme and school academic development and initiatives to enhance student retention, and engagement, while maintaining accreditation standards. Take responsibility for overseeing, developing, and promoting innovative teaching and learning approaches and material, which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students. Directly supervise students, providing expert advice on learning best practice and helping with learning problems. Identify the learning needs of students and define learning objectives. Promote the use of appropriate media to support student learning. Set and mark coursework and exams, providing constructive feedback to students. Design, develop and deliver an innovative range of programmes and study, sometimes for entirely new courses at various levels. Take responsibility for the quality of the design of existing courses and programmes, continually monitoring, evaluating, and revising them to ensure excellence and coherence, identifying areas where current provision is in need of revision or improvement. In collaboration with the CEO and UoSM Board, plan and coordinate a broad research programme and activity in an area of recognised excellence for the University. Act as principal investigator on academic projects, responsible for defining original research objectives, developing, and managing academic staff, and attracting funding through bids and reputation. Develop and oversee the application of innovative and creative research methodologies and techniques that add to the knowledge/understanding of the subject area. Responsible for developing and sustaining a national and international reputation for research and enhancing learning and teaching practice by regularly disseminating and explaining findings through leading peer-reviewed publications, major conferences, or other relevant events. Engage in external academic activities in accordance with the UoSM\'s Research Strategy and which enhance the UoSM national/international research profile, e.g., membership of committees of academic bodies, external examining, journal editorships, etc. 2. Leadership In collaboration with the CEO and UoSM Board, responsible for supporting the development and delivery of an innovative, viable and sustainable academic strategy. Responsible on regular academic reports to demonstrate delivery against the UoSM academic implementation plan and it\'s key performance indicators (KPIs). Responsible for forecasting future changes to academic policy, strategy and statutory requirements which will impact delivery of UoSM\'s academic implementation plans on education and research. Provide expert advice relating to academics and research to the UoSM Board regarding priorities and initiate appropriate action plans and delivery milestones. Accountable for providing timely and accurate comprehensive management information relating to academics to help shape and develop academic strategy. Responsible for the performance of overall operational and strategic academic excellence. Act as a key liaison between UoSM leadership team and a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including faculty, administrative staff, students, alumni, and community partners to facilitate a culture of cross-functional teamwork, bringing together academic units, departments, and schools to jointly pursue academic excellence and the fulfilment UoSM vision 3. Enterprise Collaborate closely with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to align academic strategies with business development and enterprise initiatives at UoSM by developing and implementing academic programs and research activities that foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and industry engagement, promoting a seamless integration of academic and business goals. Lead efforts to establish and strengthen relationships with industry partners, government agencies, and other stakeholders, facilitating research collaborations, knowledge transfer, and commercialization opportunities. Support the COO and CEO in identifying new markets, emerging trends, and innovative educational models that can drive business development, while maintaining the institution\'s academic integrity and reputation. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to design customized academic solutions and executive education programs that cater to the evolving needs of the corporate sector and foster a strong connection between academia and industry. 4. Acting Business School Head (Interim) In the absence of a permanent Business School Head, the CAO will assume the responsibilities of an Acting Business School Head, providing leadership and oversight for the school\'s academic and administrative functions. Ensure the continued smooth operation of the Business School, maintaining academic quality and a supportive learning environment. Oversee the daily operations, faculty, staff, and students within the Business School, providing guidance and support for ongoing programs and initiatives. Collaborate with the other programme and school heads and professional service team to ensure that academic programs, curriculum development, and research activities continue to meet the highest standards of excellence. Take responsibility for managing the school\'s budget, allocating resources effectively, and making strategic financial decisions to support ongoing operations and future growth. 5. Specific Requirements a) Qualifications, knowledge and experience Skill level equivalent to achievement of a professional qualification or postgraduate degree Extensive academic leadership experience, preferably in higher education. Strong understanding of curriculum development and assessment. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders. Visionary leadership with a commitment to academic excellence. Familiarity with the UK and Malaysia Higher Education sectors, and transnational education models Experience in driving business development and enterprise initiatives, ensuring a harmonious alignment between academic and business objectives
