Professional, Full Time (Contract)

Location: Miri, Sarawak

\xef\xbb\xbfThe Laboratory Technician is responsible for assisting the Technical/Senior Technical Officer in managing the laboratories and preparing equipment, consumable and chemicals required for experiments; maintenance and efficient handling of laboratory equipment; stocktaking and ordering of equipment as required within specified timeframe; supervise the work of; and enforce safety requirement to staff and students at all times; ensure all testing laboratory activities carried out in compliance with ISO17025 and SAMM requirement.

Scope of Responsibilities:

  • Prepare equipment, consumable and chemicals required for Learning and Teaching and Research and Development activities.
  • Perform testing according to specified work instruction and test method within agreed timeframe.
  • Perform and update all data and records for quality control purposes including the proper storage, protection and confidentiality of technical data and records associated with ISO17025 requirement.
  • Maintain, repair, calibrate and clean laboratory equipment according to maintenance schedule.
  • Order and maintain laboratory stock and resources.
  • Dispose laboratory waste including solid waste and hazardous waste in accordance with Health, Safety and Environmental requirements.
  • Maintain good laboratory practices and carry out general housekeeping duties.
  • Respond to ever changing demands on short notice and able to work under pressure arising from testing deadlines.
Selection Criteria:
  • A diploma in Civil Engineering with considerable relevant experience.
  • Experience in handling Universal Testing Machine and Compression Machine.
  • Good knowledge in tensile and compression testing for metallic and hardened concrete.
  • Good knowledge in soil testing, aggregate properties and road testing is an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to interact and communicate (oral and written) effectively and professionally with staff and students at all levels.
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently in some activities and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work under pressure and at odd hours such as weekends and public holidays to meet the teaching and research demand.
  • Demonstrated ability to embrace changes in work area.
Desirable:
  • Previous experience in an ISO17025 accredited testing environment.
