Job Description


Purpose of Job The purpose of this job is to carry out field and office project-related work for the Protected Areas Strategy for WWF-Malaysia\'s Peninsular Malaysia Terrestrial Conservation (PMTC) Strategy FY23 - FY27 and associated projects. This position will be based in Sungai Petani, Kedah with substantial amount of time spent in the field, especially at the Ulu Muda Forest Complex. While the incumbent is responsible for specific deliverables related to the Peninsular Malaysia Terrestrial Conservation Programme, he/she will also be guided by and is expected to contribute towards the achievement of WWF-Malaysia Strategy 2021-2030 and Global Programme Framework (or their revised versions) directly or indirectly. Key Outputs Collect field data at identified sites and record the data in the standard survey data form, and organisation (key in) all data into the computer database. The data should include tracks and signs identified, locality, habitat, potential threats and other ecological/biological-related data. Evidence of wildlife presence and signs, encroachment and logging activity should be photographed and documented for record purposes. Prepare reports on the fieldwork with the assistance of the Manager (if necessary). Increase collaborations, awareness, interest and motivation for the establishment of new protected areas at Ulu Muda Forest Complex amongst project partners, key stakeholders and the Kedah state government and their related agencies Contribute to the development of new project proposals, including fundraising purposes, in collaboration with the other relevant Protected Areas executants, as and when required. Serves as key person to engage with the local community within and surrounding Ulu Muda Forest Complex and the project in order to obtain on the ground information. Competent (capacity built) to assist in monitoring and carrying out WWF-Malaysia\'s conservation work. Provide consolidated inputs/feedback from the field and key stakeholders as well as to contribute towards the development of management recommendations for sustainable land use within the Ulu Muda Forest Complex. To support Manager in terms of contribution towards the preparation of technical reports and papers on biological diversity, ecology and land use of potential protected areas, particularly Ulu Muda Forest Complex based on desktop study, ground research and stakeholder engagements (specifically local communities). Major Activities / Core Responsibilities Execute assigned activities according to the work plans related to Peninsular Malaysia Terrestrial Conservation (PMTC) Strategy FY23 - FY27 and associated projects, which include, but shall not be confined to, the following: (a) Conduct field projects and activities aimed at establishing new protected areas within the PMTC priority sites primarily in Ulu Muda Forest Complex. (b) Conduct regular fieldwork and desktop monitoring of the Ulu Muda Forest Complex, GIS mapping and reporting and where necessary, make timely communications with the related enforcement agencies for response to any adverse findings. (c) To prepare regular update/progress reports. (d) Collect data from the field as per the standard survey data form, timely organisation (key in) of the data, record keeping as well as extract relevant information necessary for the aim of the Peninsular Malaysia Terrestrial Conservation (PMTC) Strategy FY23 - FY27 and associated projects. (e) Manage project field office as well as camping equipment and assets such as camera traps, binoculars, handheld cameras and any other items deemed important for fieldwork. (f) Engage and build rapport with the stakeholders such as plantation and resort owners, and specifically with the local and indigenous communities to understand the land use and contribute towards the management effectiveness of the Ulu Muda Forest Complex. Tactful evidence-based advocacy for the establishment of new protected areas and improvement of management effectiveness of existing protected areas systems whenever attending any meetings with stakeholders. Provide project updates as required by the supervisors for purposes such as revising and refining project strategy and work plan, internal and external reporting (periodically according to specified reporting schedule and/or as required), project monitoring and evaluation, developing new proposals, and preparing project documents or presentations. Collaborate closely with the Ulu Muda Manager and Project Lead in developing and maintaining a positive working relationship with key stakeholders, partners and communities (both local and indigenous) for the Ulu Muda Forest Complex project site. Collaborate with team members and partners in understanding gaps, issues and conflicts related to existing and proposed protected areas in Malaysia, especially those concerning management effectiveness, and in developing the appropriate solutions. Responsibilities: Apart from executing the major activities listed above, the incumbent is also responsible for the activities listed below: Undertake day-to-day activities under the Protected Areas component of the Peninsular Malaysia Terrestrial Conservation (PMTC) Strategy FY23 - FY27 and associated projects. Provides technical input pertaining to Protected Areas for conservation work with a focus on Ulu Muda Forest Complex and to a lesser extent Fraser\'s Hill, and when required in general for Peninsular Malaysia in priority protected areas. Coordinate and actively participate in internal and external meetings, related to protected areas in general as and when required. This includes organising stakeholder meetings as and when necessary. Ensure that the relevant work components of the Peninsular Malaysia Terrestrial Conservation (PMTC) Strategy FY23 - FY27 and associated projects are implemented within the allocated budget and that project funds are spent in a timely and appropriate manner. Represent the Peninsular Malaysia Terrestrial Conservation team and, when necessary, WWF-Malaysia on issues related to protected areas in the local and international arena via participation in conferences, workshops and meetings Ensure delivery of quality project outputs that are consistent with the targets and milestones of the Peninsular Malaysia Terrestrial Conservation (PMTC) Strategy FY23 - FY27 and associated projects. Supervise Daily Paid Assistant(s) / Volunteer(s) / Intern(s) / Casual Worker(s) as and when they are required Be able to accept challenges constantly. Provide technical support pertaining to protected area-related matters to the Ulu Muda Project Lead and Protected Areas Programme (PMTC) lead in any reasonable form and manner that may include preparing technical power points, providing technical comments and recommendations, reviewing technical documents, drafting official letters and making contact with key external persons related to the work on protected areas. Participate wholeheartedly in the general activities of WWF-Malaysia, particularly events and activities that require the full support and participation of all staff members, whether or not the focus of any particular event or activity has any bearing on the job description and assigned project objectives and activities. In the course of performing the duties as set out in this , the incumbent may be exposed to challenging working conditions, especially for field-based staff members. WWF-Malaysia provide allowance(s) to staff for working in tough field conditions based upon annual fieldwork plan review and approval of supervisor. Specifications: A diploma/degree and/or professional background in conservation biology, forestry, natural resources management, tourism, sociology or related subject. A minimum of two years experience in conducting field surveys, data collection, GIS mapping and analysis related to biodiversity conservation or sociology would be an added advantage. Experience in conducting camera trapping studies and forest navigation using the Global Positioning System (GPS) is a must. Willing to accommodate flexible working hours, including weekends. And to work in hostile and isolated conditions. Excellent written and oral skills in English and Bahasa Malaysia. Proficiency in a third language would be an added advantage. A mature individual who is able to work with minimal supervision and willing to take up challenges. Able to conduct biodiversity related field work. Ability to design sound biodiversity-related field research or contribute to study methodology will be an added advantage. Computer literate and has the ability to use appropriate technology for presentation to partners, stakeholders and potential donors. Must possess a valid driving license and has experience in driving long distances. Pleasant disposition, hardworking, team player, committed, dedicated and focused to the conservation cause. Good interpersonal skills, innovative thinking, versatile ability to work in a team and work independently. Good understanding of current issues especially having knowledge on environmental and conservation issues.
